Having positive attitudes toward the military just "by default", because their country tells them to. If they have an actual reason for their sentiment, I can understand that, though I haven't yet been given a reason I can agree with.

Clarification: just because I don't agree with people's reasons doesn't mean I don't think they're valid reasons. I'm talking mostly about the people who are blindly supportive.

You can't understand that people who have family serving in the military will generally be very supportive of those who serve?

That's actually a reason, though. I'm pretty sure the OP is talking about people who are more like "yay military because yay (insert country)" or "yay military because my government tells me to like them."

Yeah, but they follow up with "though I haven't yet been given a reason I can agree with" which just seems odd because family in the military is such a blatantly obvious one.

Reason they agree with. Not reason they understand. They just don't agree with being pro-military themselves.

I have two grandparents and an uncle who were all in the military. Still doesn't mean I'm pro-military, so I don't agree with that reason either.

I'd be deeply ashamed of any of my family if they joined the military. It is rotten and corrupt to the core.

This. And blind patriotism in general is something I really hate.

Personally I'm pretty anti-military, though I still respect soldiers who do that job in general (unless they've done something horrible) because I can separate the people from the problems I have with how much money we spend on defense and what we do with the military we have.

But I also respect people who genuinely have reasons for liking the military (having a family member in the military and therefore liking it is something I respect more than people who are all "lets go out there and attack all the evil people and protect the world" though).

I'd say I'm more fascinated with the military than anything. I just love the toys and tech. Though, ironically, I don't really enjoy seeing them used. It's kind of sad to me that so many of the beautiful things we produce (because I do think the jets and ships and even guns we make are gorgeous, in their own way) are basically created to kill.

I really enjoy military in fiction. Probably fairly hypocritical, but I'm always watching in situations where I would be okay with it (like SG1 where they are exploring and defending the Earth not attacking anyone). I'm not a pacifist, I'm okay with the military in theory, just don't like the way it actually plays out, at least in the US.

Dad served three tours in 'Nam. He is viciously anti-military and anti-war. My dad is awful in a lot of ways, but seeing war crimes firsthand (sometimes being able to do something, sometimes not; I know when he was the CO he did what he could, but he wasn't always the CO) has really changed his attitude about the military and blind patriotism. When 9/11 happened, my grandmother (the good one) called and asked him to please put up a flag, at least for her. His firm response: "I know what atrocities this country has committed. No." (Aside from being a vet, he's 1/4 Eastern Cherokee, and basically raised by his grandfather, who was in his 90s, and would have been born Civil War era, and the stories passed down to him. Let's say I got a much more detailed history of atrocities committed against various tribes than most people ever do. He holds very little regard for the military, the US, and especially blind patriotism.)

I still remember the screaming match when the military recruiters called the house for me. It was sorta hilarious, until I realized he was actually serious. I have since "borrowed" this, with a polite-with-bite tone, when the military recruiters have been calling my fiance's 17yo daughter about recruitment. "Sorry, my stepdaughter's at school at the moment; can I help you?" "Well, we're calling about military recruitment--" "Oh, she already has college and career plans; she's not interested." "Well, we'd really talk to her, so if she has any questions--" I said, with a much sharper tone of voice, "My father is a Vietnam veteran. If she has any questions, I'm sure he'll be happy to answer them for her." *audible pause* "Thank you for your time, ma'am." (Dad found this hilarious.)

Would you feel the same if the military wasn't American or European?
