(Anonymous) 2015-06-03 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)- I agree that tropes, in the TV Tropes sense, are entirely worthless.
- I think that tropes, in the more classic sense, are pretty worthwhile for the purposes of literary analysis. It's very useful to be able to think about different topics and concerns and situations that recur and to trace how they change and differ over time, and what they tend to refer to and reference. I don't think they can be used to analyze the creator's intent but I'm not sure who ever said they are.
- I agree with your thoughts on representation, pretty much.

They didn't consider predictability of plot (which is what many tropes are) to be a fault; rather, they saw art in the details of the narrative, the way that a, say, "The bigger they are the harder they fall" situation was executed.
