To me, tropes do have some value. It gives the audience that "Ah!" moment. Dramatic irony.

Consider the Ancient Greek theatre. They didn't consider predictability of plot (which is what many tropes are) to be a fault; rather, they saw art in the details of the narrative, the way that a, say, "The bigger they are the harder they fall" situation was executed.

What I mean by the TV Tropes understanding of tropes is the idea that a trope is just a big list of shit that happens in different works

I agree that tropes in the way you're using them are valuable
