inorite?

I'm enjoying the tasty, tasty schadenfreude over here, too.

Oh god, it's hilaaaaaaaarious watching people try to explain how Scalzi doesn't actually sell very many books (because apparently publishers like giving away money to authors who aren't popular) and how $3.4 million isn't really THAT much, in which case somebody please give me 3.4 million dollars...

Haha, yeah. I wish I could make really not THAT much.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What are his books look like? Are they worth checking out if you're into certain styles, or?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Contemporary nerd fiction.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He writes sci-fi that's not 100% comedic, but has plenty of humor in it. It's very accessible and not a heavy read.

His very first novel is free online: http://www.scalzi.com/agent/

It's not quite representative of his later work because it's a lot more humor, less sci-fi, but it gives you an idea.

This reminds me that I never got around to trying his recipe for schadenfreude pie.

I made it once. It's basically a variation on shoofly pie - not quite my cup of tea, but not bad either. It tastes best a couple days after baking.

I only have a peripheral concept of sad puppies. Can someone explain why they don't like him? I thought they were all for white males dominating the sci-fi world?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if they're the right kind of white male. Scalzi is not particularly macho and doesn't care about being "alpha", he's not into hating on gays and POCs, and he's a feminist. All major strikes against him by any Puppy standard. What's more, Vox Day (head of the Rabid Puppies) has had a major hateboner for him for years.

Puppies are (for all intents and purposes) a right-wing movement, aesthetically and politically. Scalzi is left-wing, aesthetically and politically, and one of the more prominent voices on that whole side of things.

1. He doesn't kiss antifeminist ass.
2. He was SFWA president when the motion to expel Vox Day got rolling.
2. He changed the editorial board for the SFWA magazine to be accountable to the president of the organization after the magazine ran a number of antifeminist articles.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course, that's why they had a bunch of women and POC on their Hugo slate and why a woman is taking over the reins next year.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
merely tangential to the topic but now that I know how the Hugos are voted for, and by whom, I have zero respect for "Hugo Award-winner!" as a positive rec for a book.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? It's always been a peoples' choice type thing, which isn't necessarily bad as long as people don't decide to be jerks and game the system.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It would make more sense to have a non-zero but still finite amount of respect.

Because really, prior to this year, the noms and winners have been consistently acceptable. There's much worse guides to quality SF&F.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
But...why have respect for any awards, honestly? When it comes to any of them, who gets nominated and who winds up winning has as much to do with politics, current trends, and the bias of the board as it does with quality. Every single one of them is subjective.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This entire scandal has also made me lose complete respect for the Hugo as an institution. It's become a joke.

This reminds me of his beef with John Ringo. Actually, I'm surprised I haven't seen Ringo supporting the Puppies. Maybe he doesn't give a shit about the Hugos at this point.

I'm lazy, can I get some links here? I just got into Scalzi but he seems to be a pretty cool dude and Vox Day/Sad/Rabid Puppies tears are so delicious.

I'm always really amused when guys like this get called beta by supposed alphas because to me, a truly alpha guy is one who's secure enough in himself to not get in a tizzy over what's "alpha" or "beta."
