My first fandom was the Ranma one in the 90s, along with the Daria one. So, yeah, very much so. It was before shipping became the be all and end all of fanfic and fan work, and if people wrote woobiefic or self-insert mary sue fics it was not only okay to ridicule them, but it was actively encouraged. We got massive huge long genfics, neat concept fics, stuff that really explored the main characters and it came every day by email in mailing lists. There was a real sense of community.

Today's one shot crack woobie shipping abo oc centric fics are a nightmare by comparison.
