Did your first fandom spoil you?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think your first fandom (or fandoms, or one of your first fandoms) spoiled you for other fandoms?

Re: Did your first fandom spoil you?

I think the HP fandom definitely spoiled me, although it was also a book fandom, which tends to function a bit differently from a show fandom as it is. (I don't mean that in a pretentious way, it has to because they're two different mediums, plus the latter tends to focus more on the cast and so forth.) I went into new fandoms expecting all these websites or at least LJ comms and a diverse range of fanfics... it just wasn't there. Especially the latter - there was something for pretty much everyone, whereas in the fandoms I found later, you were either into certain things or it was hard to get into the fandom.

I don't know. My first fandom was unlike a lot of the fandoms I've been in since, maybe because it was the late 90s/early 00s, and the ways I engaged with fandom were so different then.

Yes, I think it has. It was a smaller one and people were really nice. No BNF drama, lots of fun and joking around.

I don't even remember my first fandom, but I remember my first spoiler.

Aeris dies. I was too depressed by the death to care much about being spoiled. Although in retrospect I still don't mind so very much.

SA. Gah, disregard, entirely misread the thread.

The Harry Potter fandom ruined me for good fic, yes. Because that fandom has a shit ton of very excellent fic and my standards were very, very high for a long time. I've loosened up on my fic standards as of late, though, since I've been dabbling in smaller fandoms.

My first fandom was the DBZ fandom, so no. Mostly terrible fic and not a lot of it (though it seemed like a lot back in the day).

I do think DBZ created a lot of fandom things I find awesome (like my love for assholes with a nice, loving center).

My first fandom kind of protected my innocence in a way. (I was 12 when I really got into fandom).

It was the Legend of Zelda and what's interesting is that there's a good bit of fanfic, but almost none of it porny. There's romance of course but not sex.

Which from what I've seen of all my subsequent fandoms is not the case at all.

My first fandom was the Ranma one in the 90s, along with the Daria one. So, yeah, very much so. It was before shipping became the be all and end all of fanfic and fan work, and if people wrote woobiefic or self-insert mary sue fics it was not only okay to ridicule them, but it was actively encouraged. We got massive huge long genfics, neat concept fics, stuff that really explored the main characters and it came every day by email in mailing lists. There was a real sense of community.

Today's one shot crack woobie shipping abo oc centric fics are a nightmare by comparison.

Probably.

A lot of fic, minimal drama (I expect it existed somewhere, but it never crossed my radar at the time), people discussing ideas encouragingly rather than tearing other people down or playing games of oneupmanship, no screeching and entitled children - in age or mentality - expecting that the entire fandom needs to cater for them...

Good times.

A bit for long novel length fics. The Secret of NIMH fandom back in the 90s/early 00's had an amazing amount of novel length fics, and really well written ones too. A lot of the fandom is adults who are big fans of the original movie (and quite a few who manage to weave book details in very well.)

When I found fanfiction.net I was surprised at how much you had to browse and search for a good novel length fic.

I think it also shaped my preferences in favor of novel lengths. For the longest time I rarely had interest in oneshots and got incredibly frustrated with waiting for updates.

I can't really count my first fandom(s) because they were all pre-internet. Hanging out with people IRL, typing up fanzines, sitting through 10 showings in a row of movies we liked.

My first tinernet fandom was YGO, and yes, it spoiled me. People were friendly, tehre were great forums full of fun people, readers reviewed, everyone gave credit where it was due. I had a blast. Even 10 years later it was still much more fun than any other fandom I've been in since.

HAHA no. I had some interesting and valuable experiences in the Star Wars fandom circa 1999, but I do not want to replicate any of them in any of my fandoms in the present day. Or the future. I'm good.

My first fandom was the Inuyasha fandom and it was kind of awful on a lot of levels so...not really, haha. I've definitely had better fandom experiences since then

Hard to say, since it's still going on. I was in LOTR back when the movies first came out. I'm spoiled in that I could find fic of pretty much any pairing I wanted. I wasn't a judge of good or bad back then, but looking at some of the fics I liked, they're on par for what's being made now.

I participate in fandom about the same as I did then: lurker. People seem nice but I generally find nice people to follow. It's also different since it was LJ based and there was more discussion about hardcore stuff. There's more gifs and pics now, but you can still find the discussion. I'm sure there were kinky fics but I didn't find them (I'm so happy I never saw "Celebrian" back then). I found what I wanted, basically, and didn't have to wade through a ton of stuff I didn't.

I will say, they had lots of sites dedicated to LOTR fics, characters, authors, etc. and they were very well organized to find stuff. So, that's something I miss.

Not really. Harry Potter was it's own thing and amazing. I tended to go to specifically HP RP/discussions forums for that. And then I got into ATLA and discovered LJ and then there was the whole linking of fandoms that was awesome.

I haven't really gotten into INTO a fandom as much as I was into HP and ATLA though... :(

Maybe Doctor Who? At least the macro side of the community. That was awesome.

A little, yeah. My first fandom was that perfect size where it was small, but not too small, and very active. People were always posting new content, there were a few BNFs there weren't any dictators... We got to know each other really well, and there were a bunch of rl meetups between people who were regular contributors.

I made a few lifelong friends through my first real fandom. Truly. I don't think anything will be like that again.

A little? I still think of all my fandoms in terms of how it is/is not like Star Trek TOS fandom. That doesn't ruin any of the other fandoms, but I can't quite separate the others from the context of being compared to TOS.

Nope. Star Fox was technically the first fandom I was actively apart of and it was really small at the time, and even then, it mostly was a bunch of furries with their glorified self-inserts eclipsing the canon cast in most fanworks. Though seeing as I wrote Star Fox self-insert fics with my 5th grade friends and I, uh, something something stones, glass houses. Granted, I had inadvertently bailed years before Star Fox Adventures, so I didn't get to see the fandom split in two afterward. So no, it didn't spoil me at all.

Then there was Legacy of Kain... which, funny story, I also got banned from a then-huge LoK forum because I mouthed off at Dennis Dyack, believe it or not. But looking at how far off the deep end he's gotten in recent years, I almost feel a belated sense of vindication there... (But don't ask for the details, because I honestly don't remember what exactly happened. All I know is that I recall mouthing off to him, the admin banned me, and that was that as far as my interaction in LoK fandom went at the time) Other than that, the LoK fandom at the time was... something else, so no, didn't spoil me either.

There was also Final Fantasy, and while there were some neat pre-Compilation stuff (back when FF7 was a great blue yonder as far as head canon goes), I did some childish bullshit on a forum -Shera's Kitchen, iirc-, so coming back last year-ish was a wonderful experience, because pretty much nothing from that time period exists on the internet anymore, lmao. Though I was able to find some old fan fics on FF.Net and AO3 (Princess Artemis' fics and Fritz Fraundorf's 'Cid Wars' series, the latter of which was not as good as I remember it being as a teenager), but not any old fan art. Ah well, the fanwork quality these days is exponentially better than back then anyways.

Mass Effect, though, spoiled me pretty hard. That's all I'll say there, because I'm running way longer than I thought. D:

SGA (Stargate Atlantis) was and always will be the fandom of my heart. It was just so giant. And the setting allowed pretty much any thing you could imagine, which meant there were a crazy number of high quality, really fantastical stories. I still recognize the old BNFs even though they've moved on, and will check out what they've written recently, every once in a while.

(Oops, sorry, posted in response to someone else.)

Not really?

More meta than I've seen anywhere else, I guess. Other than that, not particularly.

Kind of, I think. I can't look at things anymore without analyzing them and adding things to make certain things make more sense. Not to mention crack ships. :C

Re: Did your first fandom spoil you?

It did! Just because it was pretty cool overall, there wasn't much for shipping wars and people could just freely discuss things without getting stepped all over. Now... that's not so much the case.
