Fish and Gein are good ones to pull up for people who like to talk about The Good Old Days when there was no crime, lol. Most fictional serial killers are written in the same way over and over again, though. It's like someone ate the psychopath/sociopath/whatever checklist and just farted it onto a script. There's not a whole lot of creativity or substance out there. Part of why I love Hannibal so much is that they don't even pretend he fits into any real-world psychological categories, but if it's not your thing, it's not your thing. I've done a lot of research in true crime for a novel that's more about survivors and victims than killers, but I don't find most real serial killers interesting in and of themselves. Consuming a lot of this stuff can also make you really paranoid, so that's a side bonus. Ever watch I Survived? Fuuuuuck.
