I am completely the opposite. I can watch fictional serial killers all the live long day. But shows and movies about the real ones? I usually stay away out of fear of having nightmares.

Hannibal I can handle. Ed Gein, the inspiration for him? No. Noooo. Nooooooooo.

I don't like to be reminded that there are actual monsters out there and they wear the faces of people. (Literally and figuratively.)

I know nothing about Hannibal, so I'm curious about the connection to Gein, since Gein, as far as I know, did not eat people. He was into, erm, "arts and crafts," which he did mostly with exhumed corpses rather than murder victims.

I think Ed Gein inspired the Jame Gumb (Buffalo Bill) character more than Hannibal Lecter.

Interestingly, despite being claimed as the "inspiration" for everyone from Norman Bates to Leatherface, Gein was not technically a serial killer. They only ever pinned two murders on him, which doesn't qualify.

Same. I love Hannibal, but watching documentaries about actual serial killers...nope.

Albert Fish: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Fish

Dennis Rader aka the BTK killer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Rader

Ed Gein: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Gein

Fascinating stories if you're not squeamish.

Oh God Dennis Rader. I think I was a kid when he resurfaced and was caught. I watched some of the docs about him and that was some disturbing shit.

I'm related to folks who work in Wichita's police department. His resurfacing was scary and tense for everyone.

Me too.

I like both types of stories.

I don't like shows that focus too much on the killers themselves - like Dexter, Hannibal, etc. I prefer cop/FBI procedurals.

But then I love documentaries about serial killers. (Then I get nightmares, oops).

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I avoid fictional serial killers too, bc I'm afraid that they will be romanticized. I've never seen Hannibal or Dexter tho, so maybe they aren't but I'm wary. At least with documentaries we are clearly presented that they are evil.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-04 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
They're definitely romanticized in Dexter and Hannibal.

I tend to vastly prefer the type of entitled narcissm that allows someone to casually And remorselessly murder people or traffic kids as prostitutes or take bribes or political opportunities to screw over innocent people as simply a means to get money and power (eg, Al Capone). Sick-in-the-head serial killers who kill solely for gratification because they're completely psychologically fucked up do nothing for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm much more into real life serial killers. I can't watch anything on Charlie Manson though.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I actually think Manson has far more street cred as a "killer" than is warranted. I suspect that the Tate killings got away from him and he claimed responsibility for them in retrospect rather than admitting he'd lost control of his followers. The LaBianca murders was also part of solidifying his control over them.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-05 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Different anon: he's so crazy it's really hard to watch.

I was dismayed to learn that one of my favorite porn artists, catering to the large niche fetish I enjoy, turned out to be a member of the Manson family who's serving a life sentence. Kinda fucked up the fap fodder, y'know?

Fish and Gein are good ones to pull up for people who like to talk about The Good Old Days when there was no crime, lol. Most fictional serial killers are written in the same way over and over again, though. It's like someone ate the psychopath/sociopath/whatever checklist and just farted it onto a script. There's not a whole lot of creativity or substance out there. Part of why I love Hannibal so much is that they don't even pretend he fits into any real-world psychological categories, but if it's not your thing, it's not your thing. I've done a lot of research in true crime for a novel that's more about survivors and victims than killers, but I don't find most real serial killers interesting in and of themselves. Consuming a lot of this stuff can also make you really paranoid, so that's a side bonus. Ever watch I Survived? Fuuuuuck.

I agree that real serial killers are more interesting than fictional serial killers, but TBH, I don't think either is particularly interesting.

Crime drama's great. But serial killers aren't really very interesting even there, most of the time.

I love watching Hannibal and Dexter, but real-life serial killers creep me out.

I'm the same way, OP. It's fascinating.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I love reading about serial killers on Wikipedia. I say it's for book research, but I'm genuinely curious about the personalities of people who do such things, and what their processes are

Of course, I don't mention this unless I'm around other writers, for obvious reasons

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised H. H. Holmes isn't up there. He had a murder house, for goodness sake. And there is documentary about him on Netflix
