:>
well he IS my favorite and I thank you for this! 100% agreement to everything you said.
Then again this fandom is not very good with 'nuanced'.
I almost want to say this shouldn't be a secret but tbh in many sections of the fandom saying something like 'Levi is not an abusive jerkass' will actually get you harassed.

I hate how fandom seems to interpret liking a character as approving everything the character does. Or, if you don't spend every waking second listing all the bad things x has done, then it must mean you're an apologist and you're just as bad too!!!

Tumblr seems to be especially guilty of this, due to the overusage of the word, "problematic".

THIS. A Hundred times THIS. I have the same thing regarding Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones. I don't like her as in I don't want her to win nor would I want to be friends and hang out with her. But I do feel that George RR Martin did a good job crafting a compelling backstory for her. I can see why Cersei wound up where she did in life, even if I, in no way, approve of her actions.

Don't forget, you only like him because he's a hot white guy!!!11111!

Don't even get me started on fandom throwing around the word abuse. Like nothing infuriates me more.

I don't even care about Levi but one instance of him kicking Eren to put on a show for the government in order to save Eren's life is not abuse. And he apologizes afterwards.

It always bugs me when people refuse to see a character with both their pros & cons. Shouldn't they just watch sitcoms or something instead if all they're interested in are black & white stereotypes?
intrigueing: (buffy eww)

I'm not familiar with this character, but I assure you that this has happened to about 3,674 other fictional characters in various fandoms, ever since the dawn of fandom. You are not alone in your irritation ;)

I agree. I'm not a big fan of him (especially after knowing that he's an Ackerman, he didn't need more special snowflake points), but it bugs me how people think that he's the greatest character or worst character. He has some horrible flaws and some interesting things about him, in the end he's an interesting guy and I appreciate it, even if he kinda annoys me.

tbh I blame the special snowflakeness on Isayama being a mediocre storyteller. I wish he hadn't gone there, and the whole Ackerman superpowers are kinda ridiculous imo. Not just on Levi.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read this in a while. Anything interesting happen?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, not really. A lot of people seem to find it boring and the chapter discussions people have seem to be shorter every time.
It's a political arc and it's kinda dragged out for a long time.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Not really a fan of him, but I dislike how the fandom treats him. (Although, not going to lie, I did find the hate for him refreshing after all the in-your-face Levi fangirling that dominated the AoT fandom. But even now I'm getting sick of that too.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Breaking news! Fandom doesn't cope well with character nuance! More at eleven!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's fucking bizarre though. So often you'll see someone claim to love a show for its complex, nuanced characters, but then that same person will take those characters and reduce them to caricatures with personalities that can be explained in a single sentence. Like, shit, what do you actually want here? I don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect they want to be seen as enjoying something intelligently for its literary/narrative/storytelling/representative etc. quality, but in reality just want cardboard-cutout generic woobies to mash together for smut fics.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen people do it as some kind of "see how morally superior I am for liking the right characters" thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
i think it happens the most in big fandoms with BNF or really AU fandoms where the character gains a "accepted fanon interpretation" that makes people forget about the actual story.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I never understood why so many people seem to always stick to that black and white morality. Most people are shades of gray and it's interesting to explore that (not to mention, makes them more relatable) so it sucks to see hordes of people just shove them in either group without much thought and then pat themselves on their backs for "seeing what they really are".

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, this always seems to happen to popular characters. I love Levi as well, but I know that he has flaws and good parts to him as well. Just like you know, real people.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
sounds like the new snape

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
only he actually bathes, which places him a hell of a lot higher in the sexiness division.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
He's simply as overrated as all fuck.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think the reason a lot of people view him more negatively is because he's insanely popular to the point no other character ever gets any attention.
He's had several articles in magazines about every little detail of his life, like how long a shower he takes and what position he sleeps in, but very little about anyone's else.
He's the only character with a spinoff that includes a light novel, manga, and 2 OVA's. I think he is in more promotional and side material than the actual main character.

It's ridiculous to the point people are frustrated and that's why they lash out at him. I bet if Levi had just remained an aloof and mysterious side character who just pops up once in awhile nobody would hate on him.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
jesus h, thisssssssss

I do love Levi (I'm an RPer, guess who I play...) and it's so annoying when people can't handle a middle ground with a character that... Exists in the middle ground?? He's far from perfect but he IS interesting and idk why people insist on ignoring that in favor of either hating on him exaggeratedly or putting him on a pedestal and making him boring as all fuck with the worship crap.
