I never really got it either. She should have been the protagonist, in which case, yes everything said about her would be more or less accurate, but... she wasn't. Some white dude who saves her (twice) and then has a pseudo-romantic scene with her is the protagonist, and she is The Girl.

But she's not The Girl, not in the classic sense. The sense in which she's separate and self-sufficient as a part of the story in her own right - that's real and meaningful. It just is.

Sorry, getting my tropes mixed up. She's not the girl, she's The Smurfette: the only female character with a real speaking part.

Yes, that's a valid criticism of Pacific Rim. It pretty much only has the one female character.

But that doesn't mean Mori isn't a good character. She is.

lmao no she exists to be the white straight bland male main character's Love Interest since the first minutes they meet.

Spoiler, knowing how to fight does not a Strong Female Character make

To be fair, every character in that movie was awful.

That's my main issue with Pacific Rim. Mako is a strong character with agency if we're judging her on the level of shitty Saturday-morning cartoon writing. I find myself really reluctant to give anyone credit for that.

I started the movie *expecting* to hate her for being a Strong Female Character whose only personality was knowing how to fight and being a love interest. I ended up loving her because I was wrong. Sorry we saw different movies.

I love how people always talk about how the dude saves her but forget that she also saves him.
