The Mako Mori test is uselessly subjective (especially considering she arguably fails it). I don't know, I've beaten the dead horse of how overrated PR is and I know eventually that's gonna get turned on me cause I loved the fuck out of Fury Road. They have different languages of darkness vs. optimism in how they approach Issues and people are going to respond to those things pretty strongly but I'm just - AHGH, like I can't even begin to express how much better MMFR is to me and tumblr is of course comparing the two like the fanbases are one and the same and nuh-uh.

is there any actual similarity between MMFR and Pacific Rim? I've seen PR but from what I've heard about MMFR there's not much actual overlap in the genre...

Action movies set in an alternative world, probably sometime in the future? Involve driving large things? idk lol the atmosphere of the two movies is totally different.

Ok, that's kind of the impression I'd gotten.

Well, high-concept genre movies appeal to the same crowd, I guess, but aside from that it's just, people like both so they group them together (CATWS is also a part of this "holy trinity" according to some).

CATWS???? That is really reaching O_O
I guess you're right, the similarity is "movies I like" more than anything else.

The connection I've seen people make is that both movies have a male and female lead who are both neat characters individually and who work really well together as a team but do not have the traditionally-expected romance subplot (or any romance at all).

Oh cool, this is a neat parallel. Thanks for pointing this out, because I also wasn't seeing the connection between these movies.

Well they both have a good soundtrack, "australians*" and awesome, loud over the top ridiculously dramatic fight scenes. And both are in my personal top fave list but Mad Max wins out over PR for me. I think. I better watch one right after the other to be sure.

But that's where any similarity ends. There fight scenes are not similar, their worlds are not similar, the colours used are not similar, the characters are not similar, their reactions to conflict/drama are not similar. They're just...not comparable.

*Pacific Rim's Australians are not legit australians but I'll give them a pass for doing something "really stupid"
