You're not missing out.

I've seen all of the RedLetterMedia reviews multiple times and I find basically all of his arguments to be empty. You could EASILY rip apart the original trilogy the same way that you do the prequels.

I remember breaking down the reviews on TFN as to why they're full of shit. There's also a rebuttal against them that's really good.

The worst part about those reviews, though, is that people who hate the prequels just tell you to watch them instead of explaining why they themselves don't like the films. It's so intellectually lazy. And it's annoying because I HAVE watched them. Multiple times. And I still love the prequels.

I agree that the fandom for them is frustrating.

That said, even for how annoying it is, I have to think it's still an improvement. Because before, it was just "FUCK JAR JAR, RUINED MY CHILDHOOD, WORST MOVIES EVER" on loop. And even as someone who's not a fan of the prequels, that stuff was the absolute worst. Even if you disagree with their reasons, at least the RLM stuff is able to actually make substantive criticisms of the film. That's legitimately a huge improvement over where the discourse was before.

It is better than the over-the-top emotional tripe but I just get so frustrated because when people find out I like the prequels they ALWAYS present me with the RLM reviews as though they're going to blow my mind.

And it's like DUDE. NO. I've probably seen those reviews more times than you. I've freaking dissected them.

Plus, I honestly dislike the people who made those reviews because they're CONSTANTLY slamming George Lucas on ridiculous grounds -- such as by saying that people were scared of him -- based on zero evidence.

No, again, completely fair, I agree that it's still bad. Just... Jesus, does Star Wars fandom set a low bar.

(Not sure how I feel about the George Lucas stuff - I think there probably is evidence for saying he's not a fantastic manager of large projects and to assign a lot of responsibility for the prequels to him specifically. Is a lot of the criticism over the top? Yeah, but a lot of that is the house style)

i like the prequels and the reviews! what do i do? i think the arguments the rlm reviews make are sound, for the most part, but i still enjoy 2 & 3 (tpm, not so much, though).
