I haven't read Poirot in years (read the books as a teen, loved them) so I'm not the best person to speak on the subject, but I seem to remember him having pride in his abilities; at the same time I'm not sure he ever exaggerated them.

If you don't like his attitude that's alright (arrogance isn't cute, and in the event I find a characters arrogance hot I always ask myself wtf), but I find that I give detectives some slack about this sort of thing.

Yeah. He's proud of his abilities and his own biggest fan. But that's balanced by being unfailingly kind, especially to children and animals and generous of spirit. In short, he's human.

If he's a smart guy with a good heart I don't see what the complaint is then. (And of course everyone has flaws, but what's important is that the good traits outweigh the bad. I didn't remember him being a jerk, but then again OP might be reading something entirely different into this character; that's a fairly common thing with media.)
