*high fives you* You're not alone, OP. I love mysteries but I've never been a big Agatha Christie fan and I just can't seem to stomach Poiret for similar reasons. I don't find him at all charming, just... supercilious and annoying. Also, Hastings is a moron.

I haven't read Poirot in years (read the books as a teen, loved them) so I'm not the best person to speak on the subject, but I seem to remember him having pride in his abilities; at the same time I'm not sure he ever exaggerated them.

If you don't like his attitude that's alright (arrogance isn't cute, and in the event I find a characters arrogance hot I always ask myself wtf), but I find that I give detectives some slack about this sort of thing.

Yeah. He's proud of his abilities and his own biggest fan. But that's balanced by being unfailingly kind, especially to children and animals and generous of spirit. In short, he's human.

If he's a smart guy with a good heart I don't see what the complaint is then. (And of course everyone has flaws, but what's important is that the good traits outweigh the bad. I didn't remember him being a jerk, but then again OP might be reading something entirely different into this character; that's a fairly common thing with media.)

I used to read a lot of Christie. He wasn't my favorite, to be honest. But have you ever read the first one? Damn, son. So much sexual tension between him and Hastings. I felt so pervy when I first thought that. >.> Now I'm just not interested. But younger-me shipped it in a WTF am I reading way. Even though it wasn't meant that way, probably.

Meh. Agatha Christie herself didn't like Poirot that much. You can really tell in her later books, Hastings borderline despises him.

As for the rest of her works, well there's no rule to say you should like them. I love them personally (Poirot included), but then that's me. I probably dislike something you consider a classic. Personal preference isn't really a big deal, is it?

I mostly disagree, and I also think that he was a lot more likeable in the show than in the books. Suchet did a great job.

But OP, you may be amused to know that Agatha Christie actually had the exact same opinion of Poirot as you do! Her exact words were "detestable, bombastic, tiresome, ego-centric little creep."

Agreed! I only knew of the character through Suchet's series, and I was surprised at how violent, conniving and mean Book!Poirot could get.

Thirding this the Suchet series was head and shoulders above the books, and I say this as an Agatha Christie fan.

I love this serious precisely because he's pretty obnoxious. That's his charm. And I find him way less annoying than Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's on purpose, considering Agatha herself found him insufferable.

A Poirot secret, yay!
He has great friends, Miss Lemmon and Inspector Jepp. Idk, Poirot is quite cute in the movies.

I get that as a criticism of the books, but Suchet!Poirot isn't like that. He's arrogant, yes, because he knows he's smarter than anyone else. But he's also very kind to everyone, especially children and women. He doesn't judge anyone before he knows them. He has friends in society's higher places but unlike most of them, he doesn't look down at his nose at their servants or other blue-collar workers.
