Rants thread

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I'm at Dairy Queen with my 9 yo son, and I tell him if he wants a Blizzard, he needs to get a salad for his meal. So he tells me wants (chicken blt salad and small blizzard) and goes to wash his hands. When he's gone this cow behind me crawls up my ass about "policing" his food, body shaming him (he's not fat, btw) and setting him up for a lifetime of food issues.

And fuck you lady. It's called raising my kid to make healthier choices in the day to day. I gave him options and he decided the ice cream was more important than a burger and fries. I wanted so badly to tell her to keep her nose the fuck out of my family's business, but he was back by then. And in addition to teaching him healthy food habits, I'm also trying to set a good example for how we deal with people and behave in public.

So instead I just said "that's your opinion" and turned my back on her, with my son in front of me. But seriously. Fuck that lady.

This happens a lot in my area and requires a bit of background information- I live in Louisiana, which is really hot and humid during late spring/summer. Leaving your pets in your car during these times is a big no-no, but the story I'm about to tell takes place in fall (one of my favorite seasons here in LA, in my opinion. Nice, neutral weather!).

A woman comes into the grocery store I'm working in and demands to see a manager, so I point her in the direction of the service desk. She rants and raves about how there's a car outside with a poodle inside, and although though the front windows are cracked, this woman is in major distress over this. She demands that the service desk make an announcement for the dog's owner, but the service desk kind of brushes her concern off when she leaves.

The lady comes back after obviously watching the car for a length of time and has another fit over what she's seen. The service desk actually sent out a call this time, but by then I had gotten too busy on the register to see what happened.

People who can't mind their own business and are obnoxious about it really bother me. Maybe if this was taking place in the sweltering, humid summer, I could completely understand, but mild fall? Mind your own business, lady! I could only imagine what it'd be like if someone did that to me. Probably rip into her and tell her to get a life outside policing dogs that aren't even hers.

mid-70s weather can be upwards of 90s in a car, even with the windows cracked, so I hope Louisiana fall isn't like Georgia fall because it's usually at least 75 around here.

Meh, I've seen one too many news stories about idiots who left their dogs in cars, not realizing how hot it gets. And the dogs died, of course.

I'd err on the side of caution myself, and as for "policing dogs that aren't even hers", I'm not sure why we have to own the dogs before we care what happens to them?

She's not wrong. You shouldn't encourage your kids to be bigoted about peoples bodies or their choices. And from a certain angle, denying your son food based on your preferences could be seen as child cruelty.

PffffHAAAA oh wait you're serious

In what UNIVERSE is telling people to eat healthy teaching bigotry? Please, please I beg you, explain that to me if you can. Also explain how encouraging a child to eat healthy while also getting the reward they want (healthy salad AND ice cream desert) is CHILD CRUELTY.

LOL

OP is being a good parent by teaching their kids good eating habits.

As someone that has struggled with their weight, I WISH my parents had done what OP had done.

Proper nutrition is fucking important. There's vitamins and minerals that OP's kid would be missing out on if they ate nothing but junk.

NAYRT
Sorry, no. This mom(?) is doing the right thing. The thing she's teaching her kid to do is the same thing I as a diabetic do every day. And if I had started these habits when I was young, I probably wouldn't be diabetic (yet, at least).

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake. She didn't "deny him food," she gave him a choice. You're an idiot--who has just been bigoted about his choice.

"Healthy eating" is "preferences" now. Who knew? Criminy, I am so fucking glad we raised my kid right from the start to like his vegetables.

A BLT is 630 calories at Dairy Queen, while a cheeseburger by itself is 380. Also you're kidding yourself if you think anything with bacon is going to be healthy at a fast food joint. Both are tasty, but if you want to teach your son about health choices, it's not at a Dairy Queen.

Re: Rants thread

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
The chicken BLT salad is either 380 cals for the grilled version or 510 for the crispy version.

The cheeseburgers run from 440-1000+ cals depending on the size. The 440 calorie burger comes as part of a meal, so of course the entire meal would be more overall unless you were just eating the burger by itself.

I will agree that fast food places aren't the best examples of making healthy choices however, because unless you've done your homework (which OP may have done) the "healthy" choices aren't always especially healthy. As you've pointed out, in some cases the percieved unhealthy foods contain fewer calories than the healthy options (albeit arguably fewer nutrients too). Seeing something called a salad does not automatically make it the healthy option.

Well, calorie count isn't the be-all end-all either. 380 calories of mixed greens and grilled chicken is still going to be healthier than 380 calories of the kind of hamburger you get at DQ, and I daresay 500 calories of salad is better for you than 380 calories of fast-food burger.

I hate when people make up stories about things that totally happened to them in real life guys!!! But they're so tailored to shoot down a certain type of strawman (like an SJW obsessed with policing and bodyshaming) that anyone who puts more than two seconds of thought into the story can tell it's fake.

I hate it when people make unfunny posts like these

the fuck kind of Stepford town do YOU live in?
Shit like the above happens all the time where I'm at. Rich white people who have nothing better to do than police and look down at others, who have no problem telling you your faults (truthful or not) to your face.

Re: Rants thread

I know people mean well but I wish they would stop saying "go see a doctor/psychologist/therapist" over and over again as though it's the answer to all of life's problems.

For some of us, it's simply not in the cards - we can't afford it. And when people INSIST on it even after we explain that, it just ends up being frustrating because all you're doing is reminding us of our lack of options and helplessness.

This.

I have a friend of a friend who keeps pressuring me to go into therapy for my social anxieties (he brought his up while I was at a graduation party for my close friend, so I'm not sure what he was trying to accomplish reminding me of it??), and no reason I give him for not going is good enough. I don't have the money for it and my mom treated therapy like a threat and a punishment when I was a kid, not to mention I currently live with her and I don't want her to know I'm doing it because once she finds out about what label the therapist fixes me with, she'll use it as a reason to berate me (she already does this with my social anxiety).

But at the same time, this friend of a friend is a real asshole who both myself and my friend know projects his insecurities onto other people just to make him feel better, so...

Interesting choice of insults.

This. I agree with most of the OP's post, but that particular word is both unnecessary and gross.

...But it's an insult though. It's not meant to be friendly and nice.

Yes. It is also a sexist insult that is specifically aimed at fat women and other women who don't fit society's beauty standards. And while it was inappropriate for that women to comment the way she did, it is equally inappropriate to comment on her appearance.

Cow is an incredibly mild insult in the UK. If OP's either originally British or has picked it up from British media, then it's the equivalent to calling someone a "jerk".

I think you're reading far too much into it.
