Re: Unpopular Opinions!
(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)I hate when people say that they hate the American government but not the people. Because the people ARE responsible for the government, even if you think our democracy is broken (which it is in my opinion).
The thing is, I know we're not the good guys and we're likely the bad guys but...I just don't care. Could I do more to stop Guantanamo Bay, CIA torture, NSA spying and all that? Absolutely. But I'm just trying to live my day to day life - pay my bills, keep my job, set aside enough money should a medical emergency arise/for retirement.
And I can't help but think, even if we are the bad guys, the rest of the world isn't exactly good. At worst, we're a darker shade of grey and I can live with that.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)a) hardly any Americans vote in the first place (there are so many that are eligible that don't)
b) the situation wasn't always like this - it had to GET this way
c) a lot of Americans actually DO support things like Guantanamo, the CIA torture, NSA
The United States, even with all its problems, still ranks quite high in the global democracy rankings (it's almost always in the top 20).

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)I'm also not sure that any of the flaws in contemporary American politics - of which there are many, principally to do with the influence that money plays in the process (also gerrymandering) - actually have that much effect on the kind of foreign policy thing that we're talking about here. There's some senses in which it does (for instance, organized well-funded lobbying and pressure groups & the existence of deep-pocketed backers almost certainly plays a role in the American policy towards Israel) but for the most part, those kinds of things would seem to effect primarily domestic policy.
And I also kind of suspect that the American people, on the whole, are not necessarily opposed to that kind of thing either.

(I wouldn't go so far as to say "the government lies all the time" but nor are they super duper transparent)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)If you say "anymore" then that means there was a time when we were responsible, in your opinion.
Re: Unpopular Opinions!
(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)I think it has happened in most countries, tbh.
Re: Unpopular Opinions!
And still is, sort of. But it's much harder to fix now.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)For example, whenever Western Europeans get on America's case about racism, I think they make legitimate points but I also think their countries are no better in a lot of ways.
It also bothers me a bit when the same people who will criticize America's military budget (which I completely agree is MUCH too large) do not meet their NATO contributions but then when, say Russia invades Ukraine, you suddenly find them acting much friendlier to the US.
It's not that they're wrong that bothers me (because often, to be frank, they're not), but it's the air of superiority without any substantive suggestions for improvement.
