Re: Unpopular Opinions!

Just to get this out of the way...I'm a naturalized American.

I hate when people say that they hate the American government but not the people. Because the people ARE responsible for the government, even if you think our democracy is broken (which it is in my opinion).

The thing is, I know we're not the good guys and we're likely the bad guys but...I just don't care. Could I do more to stop Guantanamo Bay, CIA torture, NSA spying and all that? Absolutely. But I'm just trying to live my day to day life - pay my bills, keep my job, set aside enough money should a medical emergency arise/for retirement.

And I can't help but think, even if we are the bad guys, the rest of the world isn't exactly good. At worst, we're a darker shade of grey and I can live with that.

...in what way are the Americans responsible for their government, when there's so much voter fraud? (Which your overlords have now sent north of the 49th, thanks for that.)

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Because

a) hardly any Americans vote in the first place (there are so many that are eligible that don't)
b) the situation wasn't always like this - it had to GET this way
c) a lot of Americans actually DO support things like Guantanamo, the CIA torture, NSA

The United States, even with all its problems, still ranks quite high in the global democracy rankings (it's almost always in the top 20).

Voter fraud? Citation needed please.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

What voter fraud are you talking about? at least AFAIK there's very little outright voter fraud in politics.

I'm also not sure that any of the flaws in contemporary American politics - of which there are many, principally to do with the influence that money plays in the process (also gerrymandering) - actually have that much effect on the kind of foreign policy thing that we're talking about here. There's some senses in which it does (for instance, organized well-funded lobbying and pressure groups & the existence of deep-pocketed backers almost certainly plays a role in the American policy towards Israel) but for the most part, those kinds of things would seem to effect primarily domestic policy.

And I also kind of suspect that the American people, on the whole, are not necessarily opposed to that kind of thing either.

Voter fraud does not happen very much, despite what Republicans want the public to believe in order to get away with laws that are actually intended to stop minority votes that are much more likely to be Democrat.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
How are you so sure when your government lies all the time to you? Breaking it into Republicans/Democrat dictochomy is ridiculous.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's some ridiculous conspiracy theory shit.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Which part is conspiracy?

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That the government is committing massive voter fraud but there's no evidence because of a bipartisan governmental conspiracy?

If you have information as to how this is a conspiracy, I'd like to see it, because so far all we have here is a bunch of anons going ~ooooh conspiracy voter fraud!!!~, with nothing at all to back it up.

...the Republican/Democrat dichotomy is a real thing though and it's a major part of the reason US politics is such a sack of shit.

(I wouldn't go so far as to say "the government lies all the time" but nor are they super duper transparent)

What? There's almost no voter fraud here. There is, however, gerrymandered districts that make some voting completely unfair, but actual fraud? Not happening.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
No, the american people are not really responsible anymore. Unless you count the 1% richest and cooperations who buy all our politicians. :D

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And who let it get that way?

If you say "anymore" then that means there was a time when we were responsible, in your opinion.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
We were more responsible in the 1940s. and it just came about as cooperations became bigger and more powerful.

I think it has happened in most countries, tbh.

Very few people would deny that there was such a time.

And still is, sort of. But it's much harder to fix now.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no respect for people from other countries who yell at American citizens that our country is awful (they even know how awful it is to us. "You don't even get free health care! How can you live like that?!") and yet show no interest in actually trying to help us, even just a little.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree to an extent.

For example, whenever Western Europeans get on America's case about racism, I think they make legitimate points but I also think their countries are no better in a lot of ways.

It also bothers me a bit when the same people who will criticize America's military budget (which I completely agree is MUCH too large) do not meet their NATO contributions but then when, say Russia invades Ukraine, you suddenly find them acting much friendlier to the US.

It's not that they're wrong that bothers me (because often, to be frank, they're not), but it's the air of superiority without any substantive suggestions for improvement.

Russia invading Ukraine is a contriversial subject even among Ukrainian people. It's not straight forward.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm not saying it's clear cut but I did notice online that while it was happening...well...a lot of America's harshest critics were much more...restrained. And it kind of irked me to be honest.

Not all, of course, but enough for it to bother me.

Re: Unpopular Opinions!

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-06-07 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That's weird because people irl, like in Germany and Swizerland, critisized USA in relation to Ukraine. Well, they also critisized EU, so it's not only USA. But fair enough. I don't talk politics online so no idea how it is on the Web.

Out of curiosity, what exactly are they supposed to do to "help"?
