I like the LOTR movies better.

Old, but true.

(I DO respect Tolkein's artistic vision and how amazing he was. But I found the writing dry and couldn't care about any of the characters. I also didn't need ten pages of what a hill looked like. I get it, Middle Earth's cool.)

I've tried so many times to read LOTR and I just can't get into it.

On the other hand, I found The Hobbit to be quite enjoyable.

I...kind of agree. Which makes me feel horrible because I adore his characters and the Silmarillion. But when it came to the LOTR books, I didn't become as attached to the characters as much. And there was a bit too much description of things. I love the books, don't get me wrong, but I love the movies better, and they aren't my favorite of of his books.

I slogged through book 1, and gave up a few pages into book 2. :/

I've only seen half of one movie, but I liked it. (I don't watch movies much so I've never been motivated to catch up.)

I think it's racist to not find people of a certain race attractive. But I don't think that makes you a bad person.

People are a product of their cultures. They can't help it if they don't find someone attractive. So, yes, it's racist but it doesn't make you bad -- it just means you've been influenced by factors outside of your control.

In some tribes, for example, they modify their bodies to put, say, plates in their lips. They find this attractive but a lot of people in my culture would be 100% turned off by it.

It doesn't make you a bad person. Just DON'T BE A DICK ABOUT IT.

I hate that so much (non-fashion) photography relies on Photoshop as much as it does. I think that if you have to edit the majority of your photos before sharing them publicly that you have no goddamn technical prowess. On a related note, if I do ever have to edit my photos (to address noise issues or chromatic abberation), I feel awful and regret taking the photo with (what I think is) substandard gear.

I was talking about this with a friend the other day...

I hate as much as the next person when people use words like "autistic" as a common phrase, but I don't think reacting with outrage, although understandable is the way to go. Telling them "that's offensive" is pointing out the obvious. Of course its offensive. They know damn well its offensive and that's why they're saying it. Giving them outrage will just give them what they want.

It makes more sense to act like what they're saying doesn't make sense. Like its a joke with a nonsensical punch line. Because technically it doesn't or shouldn't make sense. They're using the word wrong.

Instead of "how dare you that's ableist" , it would be more effective to say "Um...what? I'm sorry I don't understand, what does autism or its symptoms have to do with any of this?" Or something like that. The former response points out the obvious and is a statement, the latter is a question that will challenge them to explain their "joke" , and it would probably make them embarrassed and uncomfortable. People get embarrassed when a joke they tell falls flat.

In general when it comes to people saying offensive, stereotyped or wrong things, getting outraged from a moral point of view does nothing. Maybe in the real world telling someone they're being offensive will be enough to discourage them but on the internet you need to try something else. Many people see the internet as a place they can be as offensive as they want. So a better way to shut down people saying offensive things is to point out how they're factually WRONG.

Tl;dr: A better way to shut down a person spewing sexist, racist or ignorant shit is to fight them from a logical standpoint rather than an emotional or moral standpoint.

(A) Tolkien was a great writer and Lord of The Rings is an amazing work but (B) Tolkien's greatness has nothing at all to do with his worldbuilding or his language creation

Just to get this out of the way...I'm a naturalized American.

I hate when people say that they hate the American government but not the people. Because the people ARE responsible for the government, even if you think our democracy is broken (which it is in my opinion).

The thing is, I know we're not the good guys and we're likely the bad guys but...I just don't care. Could I do more to stop Guantanamo Bay, CIA torture, NSA spying and all that? Absolutely. But I'm just trying to live my day to day life - pay my bills, keep my job, set aside enough money should a medical emergency arise/for retirement.

And I can't help but think, even if we are the bad guys, the rest of the world isn't exactly good. At worst, we're a darker shade of grey and I can live with that.

How about popular opinions?

I think most people would agree with me, but I feel like expressing them anyway.

There's this idea that pops up in fiction sometimes where someone invents a "teleporter" that kills the subject and creates an identical duplicate. In most fiction, the characters are horrified by this. (Exceptions include Mortasheen, to give you some idea of the rabbit hole we're going down.) But there's always some reader who comments about these stories and doesn't see what the problem is. They talk about the Ship of Theseus, or they say that people exist in terms of what actions they perform, or they say that people fundamentally misunderstand what consciousness is, and I don't think any of it addresses the fundamental problem that People Die When They Are Killed.

As a bonus, because it seems related: I tried reading Gilbert Ryle's ideas on consciousness, and no matter how many explanations I looked for, I still didn't get what the hell he was talking about. Then I found a thought experiment: suppose you were to undergo immensely painful therapy with no anesthetic. In its place, you would have a drug that completely paralyzes you (preventing you from outwardly showing a pain response) and a drug that prevents you from forming new memories (so you would be unable to recall the experience afterwards.) if you agree with Ryle's ideas, you should have no problem agreeing to the surgery. Can we all agree that's bullshit?

I don't care about things that don't affect me.

I know it makes me an asshole. I'm not saying it to be edgy. I just have enough trouble dealing with my own problems that I don't care about the problems of others even if they are, objectively, more important and significant than my own.

I'd like fandomsecrets to end soon, not out of malice however. I feel like it's ran its course and anons forcing secrets to stay active is the biggest tell.

I actually think "Don't Like Don't Read" has credence depending on the context. It should not be used against someone who is simply pointing out errors and critiquing those.

However if you click into a slash fic marked as a slash fic , you can't really get upset that in involves slash. If you click into a fic marked with a certain ship, you can't really complain that it contains that ship. Well you can technically, but the author isn't under any obligation to listen to you or take you seriously.

Critiquing how it's been done is one thing, but just complaining "this ship I hate is there" is just a complaint based on personal taste. If you hate a particular ship or AU, the story isn't automatically poor quality because it contains that thing you hate. It's quality is effected by how well whatever is written whether people like that thing or not.

Like imagine if some one writing a critique for a comedy movie that was marketed as a comedy movie lowered the grade for it because "it's comedy, and according to me comedy inherently sucks so...there" . Now if they downgraded it because it wasn't very good comedy, all the jokes fell flat and/or the jokes were too mean spirited, that's a valid complaint.

I liked Mass Effect 3 and thought the Synthesis Ending was the closest to a happy ending we were every going to get.

I also think Indoctrination Theory is a bunch of people trying to soothe themselves over picking mass genocide just to save Shep.

I dislike people who are against the Israeli settlers, Israel, and Zionism. I have a hard time standing near them or having conversations with them once I find that out about them.
