It depends on the people but yes, I've witnessed parents yelling at their sons for so much as looking at a pink toy in a store, and people have 'joked' with me about all the "problems" a boy would have if you let him wear pink.

I don't mean any offense but maybe you should do some reading on this topic

About reading, I trust what I see more than what I read in books.

But what you see, while definitely real and legit, is only part of the picture because you are only one person. You can't really draw conclusions from your experiences alone.

Yeah, I think my worldview is kinda narrow. I haven't visited many places and haven't met many people.

You trust an anonymous person's word over a book that has been researched and cited? Really?

(Though I wasn't really talking about books, nor do I think other anon was, at least not necessarily. Reading up on both research and other peoples' experiences besides your own are both useful for understanding an overall situation, and that can be done online.)

I've seen many rubbish pseudo science books and studied Statistics (so I know it's highly subjective).

I'm sure that person has nothing to gain by lying. And the font seemed trustworthy. ;)

*facepalm* You're right. Thought I'm content with my understanding atm as I'm not taking care of kids so I don't need a deeper understanding.

I mean in general when people are arguing they're likely to, at the very least, present their case in such a light as to further their point.

Not every book (or article or whatever) is trustworthy but the more you read the more information you become exposed to, the better you get at determining what is trustworthy, etc. It's better than just not doing it and basing your entire worldview on a few conversations IMO.

Right! I think presenting a point to fit an agenda doesn't help to find the truth. Oh, well, it's how debates work.)

I tend to get overwhelmed by a heavy flow of information, especially if it's a contradicting info. Reading many sources certainly widens one's perspective but at the same time it creates uncertainty when the subject is something other than Math or Physics.

It doesn't have to all be at once :)

I have a co-worker who LAUGHED while relating that she'd made fun of a child in her son's daycare because the other little boy had wanted to wear the tiara during dress up.

Oh she knows I don't like her so I just said something along the lines of, "If he wants to wear a tiara, who the fuck cares?"

She just gave me this look like HDU, but she's also said things along the lines of, "If my sons were gay it'd be hard to accept." etc.

I was glad when a fellow co-worker (who has two kids of her own) backed me up there by saying that she didn't give a flying leap what sexuality her kids were, as long as they were happy, because that meant she'd done her parental duties right."

Wow. I hope for the sake of her sons that they're not gay.

Good on your other co-worker though! And good that you were able to speak up too. I've had situations at work where people above me have said awful things that I really couldn't openly disagree with because it could hurt me professionally, and that sucks. :/
