When possible, I think people with ASD should be pushed to become normal/neutrotypical/what have you as much as they can.

I...actually kind of agree, and I have ASD. On the other hand, if you adapt to be more neurotypical and then something new comes up for which you don't have a solid coping method, people are less likely to believe you're on the spectrum and will try to give you counterproductive advice. It's a bitch, and I almost blew up at my husband for reasons like this.

I... kind of agree? I mean, in the sense that the world is a bitch and they should be given the best possible resources to survive in that world (and that includes managing meltdowns and reactions to stuff, learning how to get along with and 'read' people.)

But I don't think they should be made to feel bad or broken about having ASD, or that there should be this expectation that they'll one day 'change' and 'become normal'. That is not going to happen and that is the fastest way to mess people up.

It also really depends on the child in question. Some children with ASD have really severe symptoms (eg. nonverbal, behaviours like hitting their head or wrist biting), so the focus would be more on changing their environment (in addition to giving them ways to cope.)

I agree with this.

I agree with the idea that people with ASD should be helped to learn to function, I would disagree with the idea that people with ASD should be forced to be "normal" or "fixed" for the sake of someone's approval.
