Welp. I came from a racist and homophobic family/town. Do you excuse me of having hateful and hurtful opinions towards homosexual people or people who aren't white? After all it's not my fault. It's how I grew up.

If you don't treat people badly, why would I care?

I mean, when my grandparents grew up, they had some pretty awful beliefs about the Jews (the whole "Jews control banking" BS) because they grew up in a backwards, rather uneducated part of the country but they still risked their lives to hide Jews from the Nazis and smuggle some Jewish children into Spain.

So they were bigoted, but I wouldn't call them bad people.

Certainly, I think they're better people than those who don't hold prejudice against the Jews but don't help them either. People who just left them to their fate but didn't have anything against them.

Also, I would say that an opinion is different than attraction. An opinion is often based on facts, or experience or exposure. But attraction is unconscious. You can't CHOOSE who you are attracted to -- there are a lot of people, for example, who have crushes that they wish they could get rid of.

It's how you treat people that determines if you are a good person. Which was the gist of my first post.

Honestly, as long as you're not actively being a dick to LGBT people/POC, I don't really care what your opinions are. There is literally never going to be a consensus; homophobia will always exist, racism will always exist, there is no way around that. So the best you can hope for is that they'll keep it to themselves.

So, basically, don't be a dick to people, and whatever, you can think what you want.

Being raised bigoted can explain bigotry but it doesn't make it okay. I should think that would be a pretty simple concept, but f!s loves to be edgy.

Just that it doesn't make you a bad person. What's more important is how you treat people.

If being racist makes you a bad person then everyone is a bad person because everyone is racist to some extent.

no, not everyone is racist. that's just something racists say to make excuses for themselves.
