I think it's racist to not find people of a certain race attractive. But I don't think that makes you a bad person.

People are a product of their cultures. They can't help it if they don't find someone attractive. So, yes, it's racist but it doesn't make you bad -- it just means you've been influenced by factors outside of your control.

In some tribes, for example, they modify their bodies to put, say, plates in their lips. They find this attractive but a lot of people in my culture would be 100% turned off by it.

It doesn't make you a bad person. Just DON'T BE A DICK ABOUT IT.

It is definitely racist. To be honest I don't get how someone can brush off a certain percentage of the population as unattractive. There's over 7 billion people out there ffs.

Really? You find it hard to comprehend how someone whose grown up in a culture that tells them that dark skin or large noses or flat butts is ugly will not be attracted to people who have those characteristics?

I mean, it's still racist as hell but I hardly think it's difficult to understand.

People who grow up in societies that say that dark skin is ugly are, unsurprisingly, going to find dark skin ugly. It's fucking racist as hell.

But it is learned.

That's why Tumblrinas who post about girls not being obligated to give guys a chance if they're not physically attracted are hypocrites, because to those same people if the guy isn't white and a white girl doesn't want to give him a chance, she's an evil racist.

No one should feel obligated to date someone they are not physically attracted to. But generalizing an entire race, in which millions or billions of members exist, actually is racist. Not every member of a race has the same features or body type, for one. And proclaiming that you don't find any of those millions of people attractive just is racist.

Well she is racist. I mean she's discriminating against him based on the color of his skin.

But my point is I don't think she's evil. Unless she's an asshole about it. If she just lets him down by saying she's not interested, I don't see anything wrong with that.

I would personally never want to date someone who didn't find me attractive and was only doing so out of some sense of maintaining their social justice cred.

But she doesn't even have to say she's not attracted to him because of his race. It's just assumed that that's the only reason a white girl wouldn't want to date him, and even if they admit it might not be the reason, she better date him anyway just to quell any doubts. If someone says "I bet it's because he's not white" and she says that's not why, they'll say "mmmmmmmmmmmmmhmmm, suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure."

Well, that's their problem.

As long as she's not an asshole, I think she's fine. If she says "Sorry, I don't date black guys" I think that's a dick move because she can just say "Sorry I'm just not interested."

I'd say it's cruel to date someone just not to be called racist -- you're leading them on when you're not attracted to them just to protect your reputation. I understand no one wants to be labeled racist, but I think it ends up causing more harm in the long run.

Are you one of those people who think that the only kind of racism that is bad are the blatant racists who shout slurs at people. More often it's less blatant racism that non-white people experience (like your hypothetical friend who thinks that all black people are unattractive). And trust me, from personal experience, it can be a lot more hurtful.

No, all racism is bad.

It's just that I don't think you're a bad person necessarily just because you hold some racist views. Because basically everyone is racist to some extent.

It's how you treat people. If you aren't attracted to black or Latino or Asian people then that's probably a result of growing up in a racist culture. But I don't think it makes you a bad person unless you're a dick about it. If you ridicule interracial couples, call black or Asian people ugly, make it a point to tell people that you don't date so-and-so group then, yeah, I think you're a bad person.

But if you're not attracted to them and you're not a dick about it, I think that IS racist but it doesn't make you a bad person.

If you get asked out by someone you don't find attractive, let them down politely (NOT by saying "sorry, I don't date ____ people"), I think that's fine.

Who would want to date someone who didn't find them attractive but was only doing so out of a social justice obligation?

Same goes for every other race on the planet, including my own.

Now, where internalized racism is probably hiding is that I NEVER wanna have sex with one. Plus, the responsibility of raising a child who is mixed would be difficult, so...I'm never putting myself through that.

I can understand not wanting to raise a mixed child to be honest. Not because I wouldn't love them, but because I'm afraid I would be completely unequipped to help them in the real world from big things like police brutality to little things like hair care.

And of course you can educate yourself. But I've seen a lot of mixed kids on Tumblr who seem to really hate their white parent, which makes me reticent.

The sex thing I don't get though.

You say that you have internalized racism due to never wanting to have sex with one (one what?) but then you say your child would be mixed.

I feel like...you may be using "racist" wrong? Anymore though I'm starting to think words like that have a lot of subjectivity to them. So maybe it depends on how you define it. :/

(I also feel like there's a difference between saying "I generally prefer X" and "I think people of Y race are always unattractive". I am definitely more generally attracted to some races than others - not just my own, either - but I don't see myself ever writing off an entire race or thinking there's no possibility that I could ever find someone from a given race attractive because you never know.)
