I like the bicker thing, but I hate hate the manchild/business woman trope that seems to be so popular in romcoms these days.

Mostly because it reinforces the "slacker/mediocre dudes can attract perfect/intelligent/beautiful/well-groomed/organized women but not vice verse" mentally, but also partially because I just love smartly dressed men in suits, so yeah. No personal appeal to me whatsoever.

And then they're marketed as chick flics? So it's supposed to be for women? But it's all about male wish fulfillment? IDEGI.

MTE, how is this wish fulfilment for women?

"Congratulations, you get the man of your dreams - a lazy, mediocre, whiny manchild who you will have to feed and clothe and clean for the next 50 years until he dies of a heart attack due to lifestyle factors! So romantic!"

Who is this FOR, exactly?

Yeah, as much as Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey fail at pretty much everything else, at least they got the "super hot rich dude who will pamper the shit out of you" part down pat.

The dudes.

Seriously, even in movies supposedly marketed towards women, no one wants to make even the whiniest, schlubbiest manchild in the potential audience feel like he is maybe not entitled to any woman he wants. Having the male lead be successful/passionate/not a lump might rock the boat.

Watch The Proposal, dude. Ryan Reynolds plays a pretty dn successful dude, even if he IS basically the secretary to Sandra Bullock's character.

Yeah, the thing is, like, at a basic level, I really enjoy that particular dynamic. And even I feel like those stories are mostly shit and poorly done.

You have to have the dude be competent on some level. And you have to make the movie basically from the point of view of the woman, and make her a good character and unapologetically successful and competent. or it just doesn't work.

(Although just for the sake of clarity, I think the point should be made that this problem is not unique to chick flicks, and in fact the best examples often come in things that are made by dudes - I'm looking at you, Zach Braff)
