TRAVEL THREAD
(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)Myself, I'm going to Norway in a few weeks! Anyone have any advice? I'll be in Oslo for a few days, and then a few days camping in a cabin. I hear Oslo is really expensive (even the hostel we booked was more expensive than any other hostel I've ever stayed at), anyone have any advice on how to cut costs? People do... speak English right? Any favorite sight-seeing spots or fun nightlife?
Re: TRAVEL THREAD
It's expensive. Try buying food in shops?
I think someone on my flist rented a bike to get around the city, if I'm not mistaken.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 04:30 am (UTC)(link)First of all, yes, Oslo is expensive, especially alcohol. If you are on a budget and plan on partying some get a bit drunk before going out! Either buy at the airport (duty free! so it can be quite a bit cheaper) or in Oslo. Also, in Norway we have fairly strict alcohol laws, so if you want to get anything over 4.7 % alcohol you have to go to a special store called "Vinmonopolet" (literally the wine monopoly). If you just want beer you can get it in regular grocery stores, but only until 6 PM (or 8 PM on Saturdays. Sundays most places are closed. That goes for every kind of store). If you are over 20 you can buy anything there, but if you're younger than that you can only buy up to either 18 or 21 % or something. Can't quite remember.
For transportation, avoid taxis as much as possible! Taxis are super expensive, and you get a 24 hour pass for public transport for the same price as one ride. Oslo has a pretty great public transport system and you can get just about anywhere on either a bus, tram or the underground. Buy either a 24 hour or 7 day pass (or an Oslo pass, more on that later) as individually rides can stack up. Just check out if it will be cheaper to get a 24 hour or a 7 day one depending on how long you'll be there. Another thing about transport, if you are landing at OSL (Oslo Lufthavn) the train is the easiest way to get in to Oslo. The fastest too! Don't take the special airport train ("Flytoget") though. Take one of the other trains into Oslo (Either the L12, R10 or R11 train). They are cheaper and take maybe a minute or two more than the airport train. Again, don't take a taxi if you're trying to cut costs.
Now to the Oslo Pass. The Oslo Pass grants you access to several museums and also functions as a public transport pass. If you are planning on sightseeing this might be a thing to consider. Among the museums I think there is something for everyone. The Oslo Pass allows you to travel a bit outside Oslo proper (which is zone 1 and is all of Oslo county) and also lets you travel to zone 2, which are the areas surrounding Oslo. I think some of the museums, including the Viking ship museum, the Kon-tiki museum or the Fram museum (lots of ship museums!) are in zone 2, though I'm a bit uncertain about that atm. The Oslo Pass also gives some restaurant discounts and access to some other things as well.
So for nightlife, I'm personally not much of a club person or anything like that, so I can't really help there. But one thing I can say about that is that a lot of places have a 23 yo age limit. This is really just to keep the young people out. It is possible to get in though if you're younger than this though, but it can be difficult. If you are under 23, my sister always laments that there are so few places that people younger than that can party, but there are some. If you are under 23 I can ask if she has any places to recommend, but if you're 23 and over you should be able to get in most places, though some have limits over that.
Also, most Norwegians speak English. The only ones who don't are either really young or quite old. Of course, there are various degrees of how fluent people are, but most are quite good in my opinion. Either way, you most likely won't have any trouble getting by!
I think that's just about what I have for now. If you have any more questions I can try to answer the best I can. May repost this tomorrow if I'm awake at the time of FS posting.
Also, if you don't mind me asking, what hostel are you staying at? I think some of them can be in quite iffy areas (nothing to be really worried about) and I can give you a heads up if that's the case.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 09:31 am (UTC)(link)Thank you SO much, anon! This was really helpful!!!
We're flying with Ryanair from London, so we're at the Moss airport Rygge, which I hear is a little further out of Oslo itself. But we'll be sure to try and take the normal trains rather than the airport ones. I then fly from the Oslo airport to Stavanger, at which we're driving out to a cabin that a friend booked.
That's interesting about the alcohol! I'm not a heavy drinker so I don't think it'll be a big problem for me, but I still would like to check out the clubs. Luckily I'm 25 so the 23-year-old minimum age is perfectly fine by me! Though the days I'll be in Oslo only fall on weekdays, so I'm not sure if there's much happening in terms of clubs, but I'm sure we'll try to take a look anyway!
Thanks for the Oslo Pass info too! That will be really helpful. Oh, we're staying at the Oslo Hostel Central. Does Oslo have "bad" areas that we should avoid? I didn't even think of that!
Re: TRAVEL THREAD
(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)From Rygge the easiest way to get into Oslo is by the airport bus, as the airport is a bit further out from Oslo, yeah. You can also get the train from there, but that involves getting on a (free) shuttle bus in to Moss, where the train leave from. More info on that here:
http://www.en.ryg.no/mainpage/transport
There's no bad areas where you will get like murdered or anything, but there are some areas where there are a fair amount of prostitutes and drug addicts. But nothing dangerous really, just a bit unpleasant! That is mostly around the streets Tollbugata, Skippergata and Prinsensgate, or at least that's my impression (I know there is one hostel at least that is located right in the middle of this, which is really why I asked where you were staying). That area is not too far away from where your hostel is located, but I think it should be far enough away for that to be an issue. The area around the central station and the lower part of Karl Johans gate (the street leading up to the royal castle from the central station) too have an issue with drug addicts, but like I said, it's more unpleasant than dangerous. You will most likely also see (and be approached by) beggars, for the most part Romani, but if they approach you just say no and they'll go to the next person for the most part. The only area I would really say stay out of is Slottsparken (the park behind the royal castle) at night, especially if you go alone and are female. There has been both a lot of rapes and muggings here, though it might have become better now. I would still advice you to stay away at night though. Other than that it's just common things like, keep a watch out for your purse in areas where there are a lot of people to avoid pickpockets and such. Oslo really is a safe city though, so I wouldn't worry too much!
Also I see your hostel is located near the fortress, Akershus festning. I would recommend seeing that at least, and it's free access to the fortress itself! To enter the castle inside of it there is a fee I think, but I believe that was free if you get the Oslo Pass.
Then just a little something for the camping part of the trip, if you have to shop groceries there are some stores that are cheaper than others, like "Kiwi" or "Rema 1000". They can be a lot cheaper than some others, like "Meny" or "Ica". The selection of goods are usually not as good in the cheaper ones, but it's not bad either.
Oh, and you can also check out the Oslo subreddit. People there are quite good at giving advice on what to do and see when in Oslo.
http://www.reddit.com/r/oslo
That's all I've got for now! I forgot to say it in the last comment, but I hope you'll have a super good trip and that you'll enjoy Norway!
