If the human is incapable of helping themselves, then I help them. If not, you're on your own, bud.

I can actually say this with 100% conviction, because I am that asshole who walked out of a burning building carrying my dog, and purposely left behind a human idiot.
I did tell him that the building was on fire and he should get out. That's as far as my heroics extend when I don't actually like you and you can find the damn door on your own.

And yes, people actually recoiled when I was able to calmly explain that I left someone to die. He didn't, FYI.

Was your house on fire? Were you ok?

It was very much on fire. I had some burns inside my nose and my lungs were gross for a week or so, but otherwise the damage was mostly the being homeless and lacking material possessions and money. It turns out you can't access your bank account without your cards or your ID or a birth certificate. Also, when insurance agencies say they will provide you with temporary accommodation in the event of an emergency, what they actually mean is they will tell you they can't authorise the expenditure right away, which really means they're desperately trying to find a reason to invalidate your entire policy so they don't have to give you a cent.

If I sound bitter it's because I am. I'm not even sure what the question was. Argh.

That sucks. Having no place to stay in addition to seeing the fire and brathing smoke. I was in a burning car once, it was very stressful.

Yikes!

P.S.
I can't deal with how adorable your icon is. Is that a hedgehog? I want one.

That's all reasonable in my books. You look after yourself first and you let others know but you're not trained or expected to go in and grab the other person. Yelling out fire and getting the fuck out is the expectation (and tbh if I was in a duplex or whatever with a fire I'd grab my pets and get out while yelling fire, but i'm not hanging around trying to find other people. That'd just get us all dead.)

Idk. I guess people have this idea that you're supposed to evacuate in an orderly fashion at the same time? My neighbours were all asking me where he was and I was like "I assume he'll be out shortly" and they clearly thought I had snapped and tried to kill him or something.
Then the cops showed up and remarked on how abnormally calm I was. That's the PTSD. Making people think I'm a sociopath and shit. :/
