Re: A different kind of Ask thread
(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)Those with pets:
Would you rather rescue your pet(s) or a stranger's infant from a fire? Assuming the other will die, no one else is around to help, and no one will see you do whatever it is you decide.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)I get that it's a moralistic thing where humans > all, but sheer lifespan is a bad argument for it
Re: A different kind of Ask thread
So when it comes down to two intelligent beings, I'd choose the one who lives longest.
Of course, I also think that human > animals.

That being would be the one I love, not the one I have no connection to.
Re: A different kind of Ask thread
Yeah, that's not going to end up well.

Re: A different kind of Ask thread
(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)I'll grant that the infant has more potential, but not all potential is realized and honestly, compared to a 1 month old human, my 10 year old dog has more intelligence and emotion at this point in time. The infant is too young even have a sense of self or danger or betrayal, whereas my buddy of 10+ years would be in the fire yelping for help and wondering why I'm walking away from him.
Re: A different kind of Ask thread
(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)Plus when I adopted an animal, I made it a promise that I'll look after it and it will be my personal responsibility for the rest of its life. I made that promise and I adopted the animal, I owe it to the pet to do whatever I can. I don't feel that personal responsibility toward a stranger's infant. I didn't sign up to be its protector. I did sign up to be the protector of my pet. I betray no one by not saving an infant, but I do betray myself and an innocent animal by not saving my pet.
That's how I feel on the issue anyway.
Re: A different kind of Ask thread
I can actually say this with 100% conviction, because I am that asshole who walked out of a burning building carrying my dog, and purposely left behind a human idiot.
I did tell him that the building was on fire and he should get out. That's as far as my heroics extend when I don't actually like you and you can find the damn door on your own.
And yes, people actually recoiled when I was able to calmly explain that I left someone to die. He didn't, FYI.

Re: A different kind of Ask thread
If I sound bitter it's because I am. I'm not even sure what the question was. Argh.

Re: A different kind of Ask thread
P.S.
I can't deal with how adorable your icon is. Is that a hedgehog? I want one.

Re: A different kind of Ask thread
Then the cops showed up and remarked on how abnormally calm I was. That's the PTSD. Making people think I'm a sociopath and shit. :/

Re: A different kind of Ask thread
Re: A different kind of Ask thread
But that's all a very hard choice, in all liklihood they'd be near each other and I'd just grab both.
Also in order it'd go rabbits, then baby, then dog because that's roughly the vulnerability going on. Rabbits would die first so I'd grab them first. Dog and baby are pretty easy to grab at once.
Re: A different kind of Ask thread
I'd do my damndest to get them both out though.
I think if it were a situation where I assumed I'd have time to deal with them both I'd get the baby first, unless the pet were more likely to die right away, but it's actually a harder decision to make if I knew I could only pick one.
I also find this a harder situation than the bus one above because it feels less absolute. There's likely no way I'd KNOW for sure that I could only rescue one, but if someone put the buttons in front of me and said "choose" I'd have to pick. So I'd still be inclined to try to rescue both if I believed it were possible.
Re: A different kind of Ask thread
Honestly, I wouldn't even think twice and I'd try to save both because I'm fucking stubborn when it comes to saving people.
