There's not such a thing as good CGI. At most it's not-too-bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people say the same thing about traditional animation.

They're wrong and so are you.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but, in my opinion, CGI just exists in this awkward space between real-life and cartoon. It pretty much never looks okay to me, because cartoon features don't work in real life and it's not good enough just to look real life. It's like, what do you say, uncanny valley almost for me.

But though cartoons can certainly look bad, they don't compete in my brain with how things ought to look "in real life".

I sort of agree with this. I'm okay with CGI if they're trying to make the characters as realistic as possible (like in some video games), but it looks so damn awkward with a deliberately cartoon-y style. I've gotten used to it by now, but I still really miss traditionally animated films, haha.

Yawn.

Really? You're throwing a lot of good work out with that.

Are you including CGI stuff that's meant to look cel-painted, or just the blatantly 3D-modelled stuff?

But yeah, if Finding Nemo, Advent Children, and Despicable Me all look less-than-good to you, maybe the problem is you.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It was pretty bad, yeah. :( If they were going to make everything look cartoonish anyway, I would've preferred old fashioned animation by hand.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I always thought the Tintin movie had cute animation. Do most people not like it?

MTE! I mean, I liked it well enough...

I thought it was cute too. I like the style and the look of it. Maybe it's because I've seen really, really bad CGI animated movies. The knock off ones are the worse.

I guess I have bad taste because I did too. (I liked this film enough to buy it! And watch it multiple times. ...And buy Tintin and Snowy beanie babies. It was a fun film and I'll def see the next one when it comes out.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm weird about uncanny valley, but TinTin didn't bother me terribly.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it might have been by the same director who did 'A Christmas Carol'?

Which, yes, had terrible animation (and was just an all-around bad adaptation - car chases and way too much dumb slapstick.)

But I thought Tintin was actually a step up for the animation. That scene with the glass box? AMAZING.

Idk, sometimes I was okay with it and then I had moments where it went straight into Uncanny Valley territory, I can't explain it.

[personal profile] manzana 2015-06-09 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I found it took getting used to. The trailers, screenshots and start of the movie were super Uncanny Valley to me, but once it got going I really liked what they did with the style.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the style was interesting, but there was something about the movement that seemed off to me.

Some parts of it looked okay, I thought, but then other parts were very... not good.

That film was kind of a mess overall, really.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, it's not as bad as Polar Express.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
um except TinTin is great

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
what? Titin is the only 3d movie in the world that doesn't make me want to puke. it looks amazing.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
I loved the Tintin movie, and I was really expecting to hate it. I think part of me WANTED to hate it. But I loved it.
