I agree. Honestly, I was waiting the entire movie for it - she was the one who didn't try in the trailer, I was so exciting for her badass Mjolnir wielding moment. So disappointed. Nat did get some screen time in this movie but I kind of felt like it was more just about breaking her down and not about her actually being strong and amazing. Overall, not happy with that movie very much, but her using the hammer would've changed that.

For me it was that moment in the trailer when she said something like "I'm always picking up after you boys". A part of me thought she was going to pick it up while Thor was otherwise occupied and throw it to him or something.

That wouldn't surprise me given how Joss Whedon wants to score brownie points with the tumblr feminist movement.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I don't think it's tumble feminists Whedon's trying to court. I'm not sure he's trying to score points with anyone, frankly, because he strikes me as the kind of person who believes himself to be above that. In other words, he's already the perfect feminist dude so end of story.

Is Thor depicted as being perfect? Or is it just that you want a more blatant display of the fact that perfection isn't necessary?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm willing to bet they want a "STRONG WOMYN" moment.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
This. The fact that her fans are constantly hanging on to the idea of something like that happening, only to be passed over by canon, makes me gleeful inside.

Maybe it's that a dishonorable past doesn't stop someone from being honorable in the present?

I dunno. It's an interesting idea (whether OP meant it that way or not), but I don't think her character is really at the point, development wise, where being able to lift it in this movie would fit.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Thor isn't perfect by a long shot and he's been able to use Mjolnir just fine.

But nope, can't relate to him with that penis in the way! Gotta be a woman who defines this trope for us!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
lol what

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think Natasha (MCU version) could be. She is awesome and nice, but she can be incredibly selfish. Also, while she does good, it always seems like there is an ulterior motive with her.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She chose to leak the SHIELD files despite knowing that it would expose her past to the entire world, blow all her covers and potentially put her in danger.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there was no blowback from that. hell, what were they going to do? Arrest her? They'd have to admit culpability for hiring her. They'd have to be able to find her and arrest her, which would be nearly impossible. It isn't going to stop her spy work.

Sure, her old covers are blown but she can make new ones. She was all over the news after the Battle of New York and it didn't stop her.

And put her in danger? That is pretty much the status quo for her.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically this, plus she also often has a very "end justifies the means" mentality, as when she forced Bruce to become the Hulk against his will.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
I really like the character, but I think she's not quite there yet. Maybe if she had her own movie...

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If she never tries it, I'm going to believe she could if she did. I'd love that to come up in the future though. That would be the best.

If they built up the arc correctly, it could be really, really cool.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are people so obsessed with other characters picking up Thor's hammer?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. It drives me kind of nuts. Especially since there's no clear indication of what makes one "worthy". (Given Norse mythology, that could easily be interpreted as "biggest badass" on a purely physical level. In which case, the Hulk has a better chance of picking the thing up.) But with the way a lot of people go on about it, it ends up reading along the lines of, "this character is my favourite so they should totally be able to lift Thor's hammer!"

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I think nobility of spirit and being pure of heart and so on COUNT, but it's like Quidditch. Being a good person is ten points, being of noble spirit is another ten, but as long as being the son of Odin counts for 150 points, the game is basically pointless.

Because it's like hanging a banner around their neck that says THIS CHARACTER IS CANONICALLY BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE. Or something.

Personally, I want the opposite. I want every hero ever to be able to pick it up. The meaning will be so watered down that Thor will question his right to the throne, and in the end do something truly noble that resets the balance of the Marvel universe.

That is beautiful. Yeah, it's clearly not a matter of "always having been"--look at not only Thor Odinson's own story, but the few times the hammer has been used by other heroes.

She could never lift it and that's fine with me. Really the only moment when she was well-characterized was when she didn't even try because that's fine with her.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hn, maybe. It could have been nice if either her or Hawkeye lifted it to show that you don't have to be super to be worthy, but I like it the way it is. How many people have been able to lift it in the comics?
