Why are people so obsessed with other characters picking up Thor's hammer?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. It drives me kind of nuts. Especially since there's no clear indication of what makes one "worthy". (Given Norse mythology, that could easily be interpreted as "biggest badass" on a purely physical level. In which case, the Hulk has a better chance of picking the thing up.) But with the way a lot of people go on about it, it ends up reading along the lines of, "this character is my favourite so they should totally be able to lift Thor's hammer!"

Exactly. I think nobility of spirit and being pure of heart and so on COUNT, but it's like Quidditch. Being a good person is ten points, being of noble spirit is another ten, but as long as being the son of Odin counts for 150 points, the game is basically pointless.

I also think the worthiness has to do with a strong inclination for leadership, which many perfectly noble characters don't have that much of. To be fair Thor only does so much leading, but that's a different issue.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's like hanging a banner around their neck that says THIS CHARACTER IS CANONICALLY BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE. Or something.

Personally, I want the opposite. I want every hero ever to be able to pick it up. The meaning will be so watered down that Thor will question his right to the throne, and in the end do something truly noble that resets the balance of the Marvel universe.

I agree with this comment so very, very much. The only people I see arguing about 'MY CHARACTER'S E-PEEN IS BIGGER THAN YOUR FAVORITE'S!' are the loud, obnoxious Steve and Natasha fans.

Makes me glad my favorite is largely ignored, flawed as fuck, and I LIKE him that way. I don't give a fuck that he can't and won't ever be able to lift Mjolnir.

To be fair, Tony fans don't have much to stand on when it comes to trying to portray their favourite as some kind of perfect angel, haha.

Nah, I agree. It seems more like bragging rights than anything.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Tony's not my favorite, though. That honor goes to Bruce, who fandom overall tends to ignore most of the time. There's no way in hell Banner's going to lift Mjolnir and I'm glad for it, since it keeps him out of this hypothetical brag rights fight.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I wasn't really trying to guess, just commenting on the fact that you singled out Steve & Natasha fans, haha.

Yeah, the whole ignoring Bruce thing really surprised me going into the fandom, since the only super evident pairing I could see people shipping coming out of the Avengers was Bruce/Tony.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Bruce/Tony doesn't have a significant size difference, age difference, and their personalities complement each other mostly; of course it wasn't going to be very popular.

Also, I think there's word-of-god canon about Bruce not being able to have sex because of his heartrate? I don't remember if that's still a thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Bruce's MCU canon is more or less cherry picking at this point, both in fandom AND canon (Joss' nod to 'I broke Harlem' but no wristwatch heartbeat monitors in sight).

I tend to ignore it because it's such a strange flaw to introduce in Hulk canon, anyway. I don't mean that from just a 'can't have sex' standpoint, either- what if Bruce was running for his life? What if he was watching a suspenseful movie with the rest of the Avengers?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thor already gave up his position because he thinks he'd make a poor king, I'm not sure how much more he could question his right to it.
