I liked them in a non-shippy way, but tbh, if anyone was a turnoff it was Shawn, who wasn't as funny of a character as the show seemed to think.

Ditto about Shawn. I gave up on the show because after S3 because he grated my nerves so much.

This is me exactly. I recently decided that I should give it another shot on Netflix now that it's over (I find myself more forgiving of ended media than ongoing), and while Shawn himself gets progressively worse there are other elements of the show that ended up being pretty enjoyable.

Yup. Shawn was too annoying to be likable. Gus, otoh-- I'd have watched a lot more of the show if he'd been the focus of it.
