Examples, please?
Any choice TL;DR that they posted to prove your point?

Chronologically it definitely seems to fit, but I suspect this is one of those 'correlation does not imply causation' things.

I think it's more likely that a newer demography into fandom flocked to something like Homestuck instead, rather than Homestuck itself changing the demographic, if that makes sense.

Whether it was a fandom that catered to their SJ mentality, or whether a different Big Fandom at the time would have been such a breeding ground, it's impossible to say. If it wasn't Homestuck it would've been something else, and the outcome of fandom as a more hateful and toxic place would remain the same. The culture is changing around the people in it, and how they're choosing to interact with the media they're presented with.

I'm inclined to agree. Fandom culture as a whole was starting to really shift towards a more SJ-ish (if not politically correct) mentality a while ago, though. I saw a fair bit of that "fandom unfun" mentality in the Dragon Age fandom back around 2010-ish, and it really exploded after Dragon Age 2, which coincidentally, came out roughly around the time Homestuck really started to take off in 2011-ish.

I also want to say that maybe a huge factor in the attitude shift too, was the 'Last Airbender' movie and the whitewashing casting issue surrounding that (which was around 2009/2010-ish, iirc). That whole thing brought to the forefront race-related matters in fandom and I think in turn, also brought to light a bunch of other issues in relation to representation in general, which is still ongoing to this day.

So yeah, definitely a possible case of 'correlation not implying causation' deals here.

AYRT

Another thing that happened around the same time as Homestuck was RaceFail (also circa 2009-2010), which was probably the first time fandom as a whole took on representation issues and started realizing en masse that some things could be Problematic. It wouldn't surprise me that the groups either drawn to/'awoken' by that would then have gravitated to the Next Huge Fandom That Potentially Dealt With Issues, which would have been Homestuck.

I didn't see the whole "fandom unfun" thing seeping into my fandoms until later on though, probably not until about 2012-13, and even then it wasn't really representation-related.

Yep. You had racebending in 2009 and then also the presence of ontd_political and sf_drama. There was definitely a shift of "more extremeness" that took off a bit later, but I'd still peg it around the 2010/early 2011 timeframe, and Homestuck was only starting to really take off around then.

If anything the timeframe works better to argue SJW -> Homestuck instead of the other way around.

Eh, I think the fact that there are SJWs in the Homestuck fandom is actually kind of weird. The comic is not written super SJW and has a lot of grew up in the 80s/90s humor to it.

The SJW fandom actually tends to miss the jokes of Homestuck half the time and they have gotten offended by the comic before.

It may just be that the timing synced to make it feel that way, but SJWs were coming around that had nothing to do with Homestuck for a while.

Kankri alone was a pretty big hint the author wasn't exactly the worlds biggest SJW

Kankri was the best.

And then there was Hussie's reaction to all the race wank + the "i feel so caucasian" joke.

I think the SJWs in Homestuck fandom came from Hetalia fandom, but I don't have anything to back that up with. It's just a feeling I have based on my own fandom drift.

and then they went to Dangan Ronpa fandom :(

Which is Amusing considering Hussie is an unapologetic racist.

If only you'd gotten here earlier.
