Homestuck is the example that comes to mind. The fandom can be holy shit annoying. Eventually someone I like talked me into reading it, and now I'm a fan.
Now that you're not dealing with those putzes, I recommend giving the films a shot (at least Life of Brian, and Holy Grail...Meaning of Life's a bit polarizing, and ...And Now For Something Completely Different is just new versions of TV sketches (good, but not much new))...should help disconnect the films from the jerks.
