Text: Years ago, I’d been putting off watching any Monty Python movie because of low motivation. But I fully intended to, just to see what the fuss was/is about.

Then I met one annoying guy who liked them and was annoyingly proud of it. I put it off again. Then I met another one. Though he wasn’t as bad, I still reset my counter.

I no longer have to be around either of them. But the taint of association still makes me reluctant to go near those movies.

S!B: 2 people I had no major drama with? I’m that petty?

I don't know if it's petty, but it's irrational. *shrug* Watch or don't watch, it's not that big of a deal.

ROMANS GO HOME.

Ahhh that scene is the GREATEST EVER if you've ever taken a Latin class. omg

Eh. I get this. There are some things I won't watch just because people I dislike liked them.

I've had the same experience a few times.

Homestuck is the example that comes to mind. The fandom can be holy shit annoying. Eventually someone I like talked me into reading it, and now I'm a fan.

Now that you're not dealing with those putzes, I recommend giving the films a shot (at least Life of Brian, and Holy Grail...Meaning of Life's a bit polarizing, and ...And Now For Something Completely Different is just new versions of TV sketches (good, but not much new))...should help disconnect the films from the jerks.

Dislike by association is a thing that happens, OP. Not it's not especially rational, but that doesn't mean it's not an understandable way to feel.

The movies are great fun, for what it's worth, but maybe that in itself isn't worth dragging up the memories or frustrations associated with those people.

I feel like most everyone must have went through this at one point or another. It might not be rational but it's difficult to prevent this sort of thing.

Sometimes you can move past it, sometimes you can't.

In my experience, fans of 'older' nerd-cult stuff in general can be smug elitist douchebags.

See: Star Trek, Star Wars, the vast majority of superhero comics, "classic" older anime, Buffy and Firefly and other Whedon stuff, older videogames and PC games...

Fans of newer stuff tend to be younger, and therefore still obnoxious, but in a different way.

I get that, I've got a few movies that I irrationally hate because someone I despise loves them to pieces. It doesn't make sense but that shit never does, so watch them or don't, completely up to you.

Remember, we're all individuals.

I'm not.

That's right, some are in-DOH-viduals too.

I'm kind of there with you, OP. :/

I love Monty Python, but my god they have some annoying fans.

(Though I suppose you could say that about just about anything, etc. etc.)

I love Monty Python, but they aren't for everyone. Have you seen any episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus? If not, you may want to check out a few. You might hate their style, then it'd all be moot.

I understand this.
I never really enjoyed the TV show, so it always annoyed me when other people would go on and on about how amazing the films were. I think I did avoid them because of that. Anyway, I happened to be somewhere and they put the film on so I watched it and it really was brilliant, so I'm glad I saw one in the end. Not so brilliant that I've gone to any effort to see any more, but I can now see why they got in the psyche.

I kind of do this, but it's like even weirder. I get lots of "fandom recs" by seeing stuff my friends post on Tumblr and what they get excited about, and some of them make me check out the movie/anime/whatever and some turn me off. I think the most effective recs are the ones that feature interesting pictures or material from the source with little/no commentary. I think the ones that turn me off (even though I tend to trust the person's taste) are ones with hyperbolic praise for the thing or that sense of pride/smugness for liking the thing.
