I kind of do this, but it's like even weirder. I get lots of "fandom recs" by seeing stuff my friends post on Tumblr and what they get excited about, and some of them make me check out the movie/anime/whatever and some turn me off. I think the most effective recs are the ones that feature interesting pictures or material from the source with little/no commentary. I think the ones that turn me off (even though I tend to trust the person's taste) are ones with hyperbolic praise for the thing or that sense of pride/smugness for liking the thing.
