Hypocracies

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Like it or not, we're all hypocritical about something. What are some of yours? Here's mine for an example:

I was absolutely disgusted by all the people holding up their cell phones to take pictures or video during Beau Biden's funeral procession, but I have no problem with the media who were there taking photos.

For me it isn't who is taking the picture but what it will be used for. Pictures taken for actual, serious news articles I'm fine with and I'm very pro-news journalist. I'm also very anti-tabloids and anti-paparazzi to the point that while I do believe in the freedom of the press generally, I think there should be some way to restrict that sort of thing. Maybe that's hypocritical. I don't know.

I'm in an awkward position about this stuff because I was a media/journalism student, and the vibes I get from people (who these people are is another story) are that professional media's time is up while user-generated content is the bright future. And I just...why do you think the local citizen/indie journalism sites are as a category better than your dreaded MSM? Are the pictures people secretly take of each other doing things in public better than tabloid fluff? Are the populist spins suddenly not spins? Why can't we admit they're all up to the necks in ethical issues.

And back to your comment, I do agree that I'd want paparazzi restrictions.

It's the media's job to take photos. But regular people that aren't professional photogs or journalists?...that's tacky.
