Re: What's a fandom thing you just don't understand?
I also don't really understand RPing. This is most likely because I've never RP'd and therefore haven't experienced whatever it is that makes roleplay fun, but hearing it described just makes me stare blankly.
Re: What's a fandom thing you just don't understand?
I do think overall though it was beneficial for my development as a writer. It's interactive, so there's one big plus. And then for forum RPs and stuff, it'd usually be an hour or more between responses because everyone always had different schedules. So there was an emphasis on writing longer posts with more description which was something I'd never done before.
Of course, after I left RPing I had to learn to cut that back a bit, but overall definitely gained some good skills.
For modern, in-character RPing I assume the main draw is the interactivity. And the spontaneity too. Like you can't plan this giant epic because you have no idea which direction the other RPers will take the story in. So it'd be harder to get overwhelmed/demotivated because you're really only responsible for a single paragraph or two at a time.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 12:53 am (UTC)(link)Then I started RPing in a game on LJ. And now it's 2015 and I can't stop RPing. I can't even explain the appeal, it's just something I tried and found out that I enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 02:39 am (UTC)(link)Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, though.
Re: What's a fandom thing you just don't understand?
It's essentially a form of collaborative writing. You're working together to tell a particular narrative and playing/riffing off of one another. And even though you might know where the story is going overall (although that isn't always the case), you can only plan so much, because you never quite know how your partner's character is going to react or what elements your partner is going to introduce in their next part. It's like receiving a steady stream of prompts that all revolve around a single theme, and weaving them together can be very fun and satisfying.
I also find that I'm always looking forward to my partner's next part, because I'm basically getting fic sent directly to me, haha.
Re: What's a fandom thing you just don't understand?
At least, it is when you have a good partner who is a similar caliber. When you have a bad partner shit is just dumb.
