What's a fandom thing you just don't understand?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's buying merchandise like figurines. Especially when people keep them in the boxes. What's the point? They don't DO anything. T-shirts I can get behind, because you can wear them and so they're practical... but I just can't get my head around paying so much money for pieces of plastic that just sit on a shelf somewhere.

I don't judge people for it or anything, it's just not my thing at all and I don't understand the appeal, sorry.

What are fandom habits that everyone else seems into but you just understand, F!S?

Fanvids.

Podfics for me. I find them so cringe worthy.

I can't remember what they are called. Fan music playlists? Where they are about characters and such.

Fanmixes. I love them. I get to hear new music, and a good fanmix will give you a sense of the character or fandom or ship or whatever.

I miss the days of downloadable fanmixes. 8-tracks just isn't the same.

Re: What's a fandom thing you just don't understand?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, fanmixes. Yeah, I kind of agree, though I have found some cool new artists through them before. But even as someone that's heard a song and thought "this reminds me of [insert character/ship here!]", from a completely objective standpoint, they rarely match up 100%, and often only work within one interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I like fanmixes because it's a good way for me to be exposed to new music. Some of my now-favorite singers/bands are ones that I first found on a fanmix, although for the life of me I couldn't tell you what fandom that mix was for.

Heh. I love creating fanmixes but I don't actually like listening to them (mostly because I feel like a lot of people really don't put much thought into it and there are almost always the same few indie and pop groups in a lot of fanmixes and that gets so annoying). Makes you think those people only know about 10 different bands.

It's a really minor thing and it doesn't bother me, but this new trend of calling favorite characters "my child" and "my son", especially if you also find them attractive. I get something like "my babies!!" as a tearm of endearment, but ...I don't have paternal/maternal feelings for characters I also think are hot?? Weird.

I don't get this one either. It feels skeevy.

Yeah, the only time I've used "my babies!!" has been for kid/younger characters.

Re: What's a fandom thing you just don't understand?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I only just noticed that recently and I assumed at first people meant they literally had maternal/paternal feelings for these characters and I'm like "Cool. Nice to know this fandom has some people over 40 or whatever in it." Then I realized they probably didn't really mean it that way.

Well, for a lot of people the Mint In Box thing (and the possibility that the figure they've stashed in the back of the closet will one day be worth a fortune) is a huge draw.

If you do display them, then they're like any other collectable object someone thinks is nice to look at, or function as a talking point. If someone had a case full of porcelain vases or tea cups they'd spent a lot of money on, would that confuse you too?

I used to feel the exact same way about figurines, dolls & all that, and then the SO and I started collected amiibos. So now I'm eating my words.

I guess at least we take them out of the box and use them in Smash Bros

Some figures are pretty to look at, I suppose. Sometimes you want your favorite character on your desk to gaze at. The "mint in box" aspect I don't get. You bought it, take it out and enjoy it. It's not really going to be worth a fortune in the future.

My bf, and apparently others in toku fandom, cycle through buying the current season's merch/toys, then selling them in a year or so for new stuff. I do not understand this at all. Why buy it at all then? Is it temporary collector's mentality? Compelled to buy all the lockseeds? I stopped buying him $60 figuarts as gifts when I realized he would just sell them off in a few months.

I don't get most merchandise or figurines either. I don't "disagree" with them or anything, I just can't see what the point of their existence is if you don't play with them or wear them.

I also don't really understand RPing. This is most likely because I've never RP'd and therefore haven't experienced whatever it is that makes roleplay fun, but hearing it described just makes me stare blankly.

If they're unarticlated, I get going 'why spend 100$+ dollars on this?' but sometimes it's just nice to look at something like a Funko.

I have a lot of Monster High dolls, they're currently in a circus.

Same. I can see if you do something with your figures.* But if they just sit around and do nothing, nah.

*Like I would love to have a Black Widow action figure. Hear me out. She's a spy, right? Goes undercover to exotic places. I would make it a running game with my friends and family to hide her around the house or their house or place of work. Like you open the freezer door to get some ice and BAM! BLACK WIDOW!

Or do a Where in the World is Carmen San Diego but with Black Widow on instagram or tumblr. Have people take picture of their Black Widow action figures in far off places and have people guess where she is this time.

Yeah....I put in too much with this one....

Aside from planting them around each other on my bookshelf for stupid poses and scenes, they are pretty much just decorations and convo pieces on my shelf. It is an expensive hobby though, and I'm in the process of shrinking it down to the figures and statues I really like.

Otoh, I used to be so irritated when collectors never took them out of boxes, how dare they invest, and I'd just recycle mine away. Well fuck me because I devalued quite a few things that could have sold for twice as much as I got them. Welp, money's money, so any recuperation is a good thing!

Cosplay, I will never get it. Good cosplay is all right--I'm not in the Batman fandom at all but there's some guy who cosplays the Joker at conventions and whatnot and he's excellent so I appreciate a job well done--but for the most part I just get secondhand embarrassment from it.

The excess of smut for fandoms where canon isn't particularly smutty - if smutty at all, for that matter, like Harry Potter. I have nothing against it, I just don't know where the excess comes.

Conversely, I'm in a fandom for a book series that's 80% smut (it's Earth's Children, takes place in the Ice Age and the sex overload is meant to be cultural), and the fic is... pretty tame. Maybe there's enough in the books?

People calling themselves trash.

Also the disregard for tagging on tumblr has started translating over to other websites like Ao3 and 8tracks. Ugh.

Dakimakuras (those creepy body pillows). I think they're really weird.
And I actually don't like fandom shirts - but only a certain kind: I think those pretty ones can be cool (those that are often not official fan shirts but instead really nice designs based on fandoms. I also think some band shirts are cool) - but I always cringe when I see grown people walk around with those anime-character-printed-on-a-cheap-shirt things.
