The excess of smut for fandoms where canon isn't particularly smutty - if smutty at all, for that matter, like Harry Potter. I have nothing against it, I just don't know where the excess comes.

Conversely, I'm in a fandom for a book series that's 80% smut (it's Earth's Children, takes place in the Ice Age and the sex overload is meant to be cultural), and the fic is... pretty tame. Maybe there's enough in the books?

Oh my, could you point me in the direction of the Earths Children fandom please? I love (most of) that series.

I think it's because there's not much smut in the canon that that happens. Like, people feel a smut void and want to fill it.
