Does anybody ever look at fancy cake decorations and think "holy shit, that's way too much frosting"? I'd be scraping half of this stuff off. Are cakes just supposed to be just decorative now?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
this is how I feel about those Ace of Cake type shows. the cakes look cool, but when I look at them all I can think is "man, that probably tastes disgusting" (they probably taste fine for all I know, but I can't help but think it anyway)

Those shows gross me out because it seems like 50% of the cake is Styrofoam.

Yes. But then, I'm not a huge cake fan in general. For me to like a cake it has to be really moist and have just the right balance of frosting to cake.

NEVER! Cake is just the serving plate for frosting as far as I am concerned.

PREACH.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know anything about that but I don't like frosting so I always take a part of the cake with the least amount. I'm all for no-frills cakes.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
My aunt is a cake decorator and makes her fancy decorations out of some weird mixture of powdered sugar, flour, and water and then paints them with some special food coloring paint. So you're right, they're technically edible but really not meant to be eaten.

It depends. Buttercream, for example, is delicious and I will hear no word against it. The more, the better is my motto.

The cheap sugary stuff from the supermarket... Eh, it's okay, but too much of it drives me nuts.

Fondant, I don't like, but you can usually just peel it off the cake, so it doesn't really bug me.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Way too much frosting? Sounds great, I would eat it all!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Cake with too much frosting is the fucking worst.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
What is this "too much frosting" you speak of?

Surely there's no such thing.

Frosting is basically the only reason for cakes to exist in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I got a birthday cake this year for the first time in many years, a traditional cake with buttercream frosting, which I love. It was delicious but I found myself not eating the frosting because it was so sweet it made me jittery. Alas, I am no longer the entire tub of frosting eating fool I once was....

Have you cut back on sugar in the last couple of years or something? That's what I did (don't get me wrong, I still have more than I should, but I'm more aware of it now. I don't go chugging down Dr. Pepper and eating snack cakes everyday, lol) and some things taste majorly different.

Sometimes my dad will bring me cake or cupcakes, and the frosting will be so sweet that it tastes like eating pure sugar. (He doesn't make them, btw. He's gets them from friends.) It's gross. I almost never finish the frosting because...yea, it's too much.

Now there are still plenty of desserts I enjoy, but some people (or shops) really overdo it with the sugar.

I hate frosting. I think it's a texture thing? Lots of frosting on cake is like soft on soft and I hate it. A ganache is about the most I can handle.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on. I hate soft on soft food except for a few exceptions. I need something I can sink my teeth into damnit and so much frosting on cake makes everything feel like mush.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
you mean actual frosting or the fondant shit that half the decorations are made out of? Because fuck fondant. Fondant is disgusting. It's gummy and has no flavor, not even a sugary taste. but so many fancy cakes are now decorated with fondant, you can hardly avoid it. The cake sculptures made that way are just a waste of food and I hate them.

but actual cake covered in actual buttercream or whipped cream frosting? please to put it all in my fat mouth right now.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Normal fondant is gross af but I find marshmallow fondant quite pleasant really. My girlfriend made me a decorated cake with it for my last birthday, and I thought it was a great alternative to plain fondant.

Marzipan can also be used in place of fondant but that is a SUPER acquired taste and I don't like it at all myself.

No, I absolutely agree.

And I'll take it a step further - most online recipes are WAYYY too sweet. Mostly because they're American, I think, and you're used to having more sugar than flour.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-06-11 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly just look at them and wish I was talented enough to do that with icing.

I don't usually think it's too much, it's usually that fondant crap that tastes revolting. Or that super-sugary gunk they layer on cakes from groceries or horrible W-M. There is *always* too much of that muck (and you can taste the chemicals in the over-bright icing).

But a regular cake with home made, cream-cheese icing? I could eat that stuff with a spoon. And have.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel the same way. Most of the time, the frosting doesn't even taste good, it's purely decorative.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-12 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it when I see fancy cakes, but I don't like too much frosting on cake either, and my absolute favorite cakes have no frosting at all.
