Keep in mind I am venting at the moment and obviously not going to talk here the way I do to my mom's face about this when I am not venting

Do you want to hear what I literally say? It goes something like "hey mom, if you want to lose those pounds I could help? I can make you a nutrition guide or help you find low-calorie meals and recipes? No, you hate "diet food"? Okay um, how about a light exercise guide? No, you don't want to be "one of those muscular women"? Okay um, maybe some general tips for fitness and health? No, you're too old to change? Well, um, I guess I can't really help you then but you've been unhappy about those ten pounds for years now and to be honest with you it makes me sad to hear you unhappy about this all the time"

Judge away, but if you think I'm rude for that I can't agree with you, nor can I agree with her that this makes me a "rude, self-absorbed unsympathetic child that just wants her to shut up forever"

You're judging the end of the rope without seeing all the rest of it, and calling me judgey

I think it is rude to keep bringing it up when it's really obvious she doesn't want to talk about it! That's your mom, dude. Be nice. It's really easy for legit concern to turn into passive aggression.

Please keep in mind that you're talking about ten pounds, not a serious health issue like smoking. Please also keep in mind that we live in a society where a woman splurging on a sweet without saying she feels bad about it might be called a glutton. I mean you, her kid who keeps bringing up nutrition around her, is observing her eating cake, and she knows damn well you disapprove.

What... no, she brings it up constantly at random times too, not only when she's eating

I know she's sensitive about the weight, I would never bring it up on my own

sa

I don't bring up what she could do or how I could help every time she complains, either. I was paraphrasing the last time we talked about it which isn't every time. After she called me rude and uncaring every time I tried to talk to her about it, I don't bother any more

Am still frustrated and annoyed but those are feelings not actions

People are complicated and sometimes afraid of change. There is something deeper going on with your mom than ten pounds but it's also not your job to be her therapist. You have to detach yourself from her problems and find a way to live that makes you happy.

Okay but... still.

I think it's just one of those things we have to deal with. She's probably always going to be touchy about it.. best to drop it.

nayrt - I agree that the OP would be be a jerk if they kept bringing it up to their mom when she clearly doesn't want to discuss her weight, but that's not what's happening? If the mom doesn't like advice, maybe she should drop the subject.
