IF you live in the UK

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't even bother trying to get mental health help.

Fucking hate everything.

Fuck.

Another of Iain Duncan Smith's victims?

Not OP, but the state of mental health services in the UK has been shit for many, many years, long before IDS. I first went for counselling in the early 2000's (when Labour were supposedly making everything better for everyone) with severe depression and anxiety and had to wait over eight months for an appointment.

On the other hand though, that was a long time ago and the Tories have now had over five years to "fix" things and have consistently made things worse. They can't even blame the previous administration now, because they were the previous administration.

...that's what I'm saying? The mental health system has been broken in the UK under several different governments, for many, many years. Blaming the Tories for it now as though it was a wonderful and magically efficient service before they got their claws into it is illinformed and disingenuous.

Minimising the failure of the conservatives in order to take a potshot at Labour is just making the current system worse and reducing the chance of anyone else getting a chance to make it better.

Oh, believe me if I wanted to take potshots at Labour there are far more examples I could use than just this one.

I'm saying everyone's failed, and have been failing, for a very long time. The system was shit under Labour, the system was shit under the coalition and the system will no doubt continue to be shit under the Tories. The flaws in the mental health system are fundamental, and no government's amount of fancy window dressing with change that without a total overhaul that no one will undertake regardless of party.

Screaming that the Tories suddenly made it that way and OMG IDS is the devil! is naive and stupid.

I had my first therapy season today. CBT. One of the questions on the form I took with asked "Do you think about harming yourself of suicide" and the answers were

1-Never 2-Some days 3-Most days and 4-Everyday

I scored a big old 4.

Therapist talked to me about it for about 20 mins and ends up freaking out. "I can't help you, but I also can't let you go without speaking to the crisis team. If you leave here and don't see the crisis team I am obligated to call the police"

I wait for a significant length of time. I see the crisis team. we talk for 10 mins. they decide that I've done this to myself, and they can't help me. I need to either kill myself or decide not to. That's all. I should continue with my CBT and maybe swap meds and stop sleeping so much. Have a nice day.

I was genuinely hoping there would be some help. Something encouraging. Somthing. Anything. I have never felt more hopeless.

Oh that's awful. I'm so sorry you've had such a terrible experience. *hugs*
I wish I could say something that wasn't going to just seem like an empty platitude, but my heart genuinely goes out to you anon. Sending you all the love and well wishes. <3

Thank you. I just want everything to fuck off.

That's awful, I'm so sorry.

I know it can be incredibly difficult to articulate things like this, but what do you think would have helped you in that moment? What could they have said or done that would be encouraging for you? What about the meds and CBT advice didn't feel sufficient to you? Sometimes just being able to pinpoint and tell them exactly what it is you need from them can help.

Are there any other resources you can access? I know most of the helplines etc. aren't free, but IIRC Papyrus has a freephone (albeit not 24/7 unfortunately, I think they're 10-10 on weekdays and 2-5 on weekends) helpline for younger people with thoughts of harm/suicide.

Wow. That's horrifying.

As messed up as health care finances are here in the USA, I think I've had better mental health care than that. Then again, I don't actually answer the suicide question quite that way.

That is horrifying. Any chance you could contact a therapist over the internet instead? Skype sessions instead of having to be local? Or is the cost prohibitive?

Cry me a river. You think the UK is bad? Triage nurse's response to a woman with an eating disorder turning up for emergency intake was "Go get some dinner." Then the cops sectioned some stupid stoner schmuck for being an idiot on Twitter or smth.

Then there's me. If I wasn't so ornery, I would probably have had a breakdown by now. As it is, I'm hanging on by my teeth. And looking so so so forward to what's about to hit the fan, re: my situation. (Not.) Feh.

Use the frustration as motivation to keep on keeping on, anon. That's what I'm doing. No one's going to help me but me. Story of my life.

fuck off, don't dismiss other people's problems because of your own
