I actually really wish JKR had killed Arthur Weasley. I think it would have made more sense than killing off both Remus and Tonks.

And Ron instead of Fred. That would have had more emotional repercussions and driven home the war is hell theme. Come to that, I think Lucius ought to have corpsed it too.

I don't think Lucius dying would have changed anything. Draco dying in the final battle even after Narcissa did what she did would have been interesting, though.

Ron's death could have been interesting too, though I am happy that the trio all survived.

Lucy's death would have completed the theme of clearing the board of the past generation. On the Light side pretty much everyone who meant anything to Harry died, even Snape, but on the Dark side it felt like it was mostly redshirts and mooks. I put it down to JK not properly developing more kids and adults on Voldie's side, really the only one of the adult cast with any emotional connection to Harry on the opposing side was Lucy and to have him survive means that Draco does not have the same clean sweep that Harry has. Harry and Draco's brief moment in the epilogue would have carried more weight if Lucy had copped his packet too.

Bellatrix wasn't a redshirt or mook, and she died. And on the past generation on the light side, there was still Minerva at least as well as Molly and Arthur.

I think it was less about getting rid of the past generation and more about JK wanting Harry to have to stand on his own and so killing off most of the adult figures in his life.

Bellatrix death meant something in the Neville Longbottom series, but what was her connection to Harry? Sorry, she was a mook. Lucy had a big connection to Harry via Draco, and it just feels unbalanced to have him still around and Harry to lose every potential father figure. Sure he has plenty of mother figures still around, but not father figures. Arthur is more like a kooky uncle and Hagrid isn't even that.

I'm confused. Are you saying Draco was the dark equivalent of Harry? Because I think that may be elevating his importance. Draco was the bully character who managed to grow out of it, but he was never Harry's equivalent in the story. That would be Voldemort. And Bellatrix was Voldemort's top follower, which makes her not a mook.

Aside from Bellatrix being the person who killed Harry's godfather, and the one person he was willing, even if only momentarily, to horribly torture?

I was CONVINCED going into Book 7 that Hagrid would die, since I thought it would symbolize the end of Harry's childhood and shit getting real.

And see, I was convinced he wouldn't die just because it seemed too obvious and everyone was assuming he would die even way back in book 4. After Sirius died instead of him in book 5, I was convinced Hagrid would make it to the end.

I assumed Hagrid would die because as the books went on, it seemed like JKR didn't know what the hell to do with him, which is why he spent so much time off the radar.

Ron Weasley should've died, imo. Instead of JKR just killing everyone else to compensate for not killing anyone in the trio.
