What is a character death

That didn't happen but you thought was needed? Either because you hated the character or it would have been good for the narrative.

I actually really wish JKR had killed Arthur Weasley. I think it would have made more sense than killing off both Remus and Tonks.

And Ron instead of Fred. That would have had more emotional repercussions and driven home the war is hell theme. Come to that, I think Lucius ought to have corpsed it too.

I don't think Lucius dying would have changed anything. Draco dying in the final battle even after Narcissa did what she did would have been interesting, though.

Ron's death could have been interesting too, though I am happy that the trio all survived.

I was CONVINCED going into Book 7 that Hagrid would die, since I thought it would symbolize the end of Harry's childhood and shit getting real.

And see, I was convinced he wouldn't die just because it seemed too obvious and everyone was assuming he would die even way back in book 4. After Sirius died instead of him in book 5, I was convinced Hagrid would make it to the end.

Ron Weasley should've died, imo. Instead of JKR just killing everyone else to compensate for not killing anyone in the trio.

None of those characters should have died because they're all amazing

Loki in Thor: The Dark World.

I know Thor's trailer is hitched to Loki's at this point, jacked up by marketing and fangirls, but I am so tired of Thor's character being weighed down by this 'me and my brother' trope. He has the potential to be so much more than that as a character and I'm pretty annoyed that it's basically all he's going to be defined with in his trilogy.

I actually love Thor and Loki's relationship but I still absolutely agree that Loki should've died.

(Even if they brought him back later... That would've made me happier than Loki doing god knows what to Odin and ruling Asgard. I know mischief and betrayal is Loki's thing, but I'm tired of it.)

Re: What is a character death

(Anonymous) 2015-06-13 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. Loki needed to live so he can royally fuck up ruling Asgard. Thor needs to learn that abdicating isn't the answer - he needs to figure out how to both be a good person and a good ruler, rather than giving up the potential for the latter in service to the former. That was never going to happen with Odin on the throne, because Odin just isn't as likely to fuck up spectacularly as Loki-as-Odin is, given his experience.

Megatron in every single Bayverse Transformers movie. For fuck's sake Bay, there have been other evil transformers you can use. Come to that, Megatron in TF: Prime too. I don't know if you noticed, but in Transformer's Prime, the Decepticons win. Optimus dies, Megatron lives, and the age of Primes is no more with more Decepticons than Autobots left. I know the show treats it like an Autobot victory, but as soon as you stop for a moment you see that Megatron wins (Starscream loses, but Megatron wins). And despite having Megatron still alive, the sequel cartoon goes for a robot furry who does nothing as it's main enemy.

Is this an inside joke? Because I think, whatever the characters say, the beauty of the movie is that he doesn't die, and even the early foreshadowing actually sets up how he lives.

Agreed. The ending is trite and cheesy, but it's trite and cheesy on purpose, and the story is as much about the author finding a new way to be happy as it is about Harold.

Luke Spencer's, but with Anthony Geary getting ready to permanently leave General Hospital this summer, we may just get it.

I don't know that I can second-guess the narrative but there are a few characters in One Piece I thought had been killed, but turns out they survived and I was kind of disappointed. There's an undercurrent of savagery to the world but it's usually played out in terms of torture, abuse, and loss of things other than lives, rather than by on-screen or even off-screen deaths. I don't know that the story would be better if some people had actually died or not...but I know I wish some had.

e.g. I wish Moria had been killed. It would have added an extra layer to the already complex relationship between the Marines, the World Government, and the shichibukai. Not by Luffy, I mean at Marineford. For the longest time I thought all of CP9 had died in the Buster Call but apparently they didn't, which is a real shame because it would have been additional irony to the Marines firebombing their own fortress. I always thought Enel's priests died (and one translation does suggest Sanji killed the one guy) but after it was revealed in a cover story that Gedatsu didn't, I assume the rest didn't either, and that's kind of lame.

I don't have a strong need for any of the Straw Hats to be shown as killers, but at the same time, none of them have any real moral compunction to deliberately not kill, and given their big talk I'd expect Sanji and Zoro to have killed/will kill if needed. And yet, so far, none of their foes have been confirmed to have died.

A common joke in my part of the fandom was that no one's really dead until we're shown their gravestone or they die in a flashback. And even then we didn't expect it to hold!

Sasuke. And tbh? Naruto himself.

Re: What is a character death

(Anonymous) 2015-06-13 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely agree on Sasuke, but that's mostly because I spent years hating him (though it'd faded to mild disdain near the end since I'd stopped actually caring about anyone by that point, haha).

Anyway, both Naruto & Sakura were seriously unhealthily obsessed with him, so I think it'd have been a hell of a lot better for their characters if he had died.

Clint/Hawkeye in Avengers: AoU. And I actually like the character.
I thought the way they kept clumsily "foreshadowing" it only to sooo surprisingly kill off a character with massively bigger potential instead was very stupid. I thought his character was so terribly assassinated by the "Little House on the Prairie" background they gave him. He should have died.

Ugh, yes. The rest of the Avengers were at least recognizable in comparison to their characters in the comics but Clint is just...what the fuck? Giving him a stable relationship and a mess of kids is just hilarious. I wouldn't have been sorry to him go tbh
