Is this an inside joke? Because I think, whatever the characters say, the beauty of the movie is that he doesn't die, and even the early foreshadowing actually sets up how he lives.

Agreed. The ending is trite and cheesy, but it's trite and cheesy on purpose, and the story is as much about the author finding a new way to be happy as it is about Harold.

And even the author admits it's cheesy and is planning to re-write it.

A common meta is that the movie as-we-see-it IS the rewrite.

Nah, he is originally supposed to die but the author changed the story so he would live (after she found out he was real). I get that was the point of the show, but the story was definitely more elegant had he died.

da

but... why? Someone else said this to me once, and I have no idea what the point of the film would've been then. The only way it would've been been interesting if it were a surprising death after the author tried to save him, but even that would've gotten morbid in a way that was not appropriate for that movie.

I felt that within the plot of the story she was writing, his death would have made for a great ending. Like, if that had been an actual book, his death would have been really satisfying.

But isn't that the point of the movie? That the author realized that it would have been a better story but that his life was worth more?

Yes, but I mean...it would have made a better story. I get why they did it, but him dying would have been really satisfying in the story.

nyart

It wasn't just that he was real (and the possibility that she might've killed other people this way). The story was supposed to be a tragedy since he "dies unexpectedly" saving the boy, but since he knew and was willing to die anyway it became a story about sacrifice instead. It's not quite "the book changed genres on me" but I suspect something similar also played into it.

I agree. It felt cheap & cliché that he didn't die.
