(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)Shockingly, when we're talking about fiction written for fun and shared for free, a lot of people aren't interested. Fancy that.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)Actually, callout culture has made it so it's NOT okay to fuck up. Not unless you want to risk being someone's by-name punching bag in their weekly rant about how awful everyone is
isn't that what they implied when they said that callout culture was causing people to be too afraid to write certain things and results in less diversity?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)My point is in that social climate is disingenuous to exhort people to post stuff and say "it's okay to fuck up!" Because it isn't, unless being the target of a pile on and permanently assigned a reputation for being a racist idiot is a non issue for you.
Oddly for most people it's an issue.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 02:14 am (UTC)(link)Actually my point is whether it's fair to exhort OTHER PEOPLE to write (and POST, which is the important part) it anyway. Which is slightly different.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)I think I'd rather people start essentially calling out the call out culture then stop writing. I also want OP to know that there are people out there that are okay with a writer messing up and won't freak out about it. Heck I won't even critique a person unless they directly ask for it.
If OP really wants to write and share then I want to encourage them, some people are afraid of fandom reactions but not always to the point that they will give up entirely.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)Then you go right ahead and start dismantling the call-out culture. As noted above, I still find it seriously disingenuous to say things like "it's okay to fuck up", because whether or not YOU believe it is, the people who set up the pile-ons DON'T, and they're the ones that'll show up on OP's doorstep/etc.
If you want to be encouraging, offer defense. "I know they're going to come yell at you but do it anyway!" isn't really encouraging.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)Oh I do, darling. Anon wants other people - and those like OP for whom the attacks ARE clearly a barrier/reason not to post - to do so.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)And no one knows if OP is going to get called out in any case, Op may be scared of that, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. As much as tumblr loves a pile on, there are tons of things that go past fandoms radar all the time, especially if said piece really isn't massively offensive but has one or two things that could have been done better.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 02:17 am (UTC)(link)In other words, an urging to go out and make yourself vulnerable to attack, rather than any kind of solidarity/reassurance. Which also goes around circles concerned with diversity in fiction, quite a lot.
