I actively avoid fic where characters are explicitly described as asexual (as a headcanon) because I've never seen one written well.

I've never seen any that were well-written either, but I keep reading them in the hopes that eventually I will find some that are. I'm asexual and since there are zero canon asexual characters in anything that I'm aware of, people's headcanons (or AUs or whatever) are pretty much all there is if I want to read about asexual characters.

One of the problems I've found is that the asexual headcanons that I personally have come across are from other demographics. I'm not saying that they shouldn't try their hand at writing asexuality (it's fantastic that they do, visibility is great) but even though the writers are well meaning it often comes off as pandering due to an over-extended focus, probably in no small part due to today's social justice climate. The fic produced revolves so much around asexuality that they're all a little trite (and ace writers aren't exempt from that one; bad writing happens to everyone).

Truth. My asexuality is just a sidenote in my life.

Granted, I don't really read shipping fic, and if I do, it's not really smutfic, so I couldn't give a damn either way.

Varys and Daryl Dixon are about the only canonically asexual characters I know of, and being asexual doesn't mean you wouldn't want to be in a relationship with anyone.

I thought Daryl was rumored/speculated to be asexual (along with some people thinking he was gay), but then they finally said he was straight?

That's a good point. I've seen fics from authors who aren't asexual and it kind of comes across a little preachy/after school special-esque.

There are plenty of people, including critics, who consider Bilbo and Frodo Baggins to be asexual. Not saying I agree, but as far as canon characters go, you can make an argument for them.

Yeah, me too. :-/ I'm ace, and I thought I'd find sweet, loving fics, instead I found a lot of porn involving...asexual people? Why?? I don't look anymore; it freaked me out. Why should the asexual-themed fiction be pornier than the "regular" kind??

I know, and it makes no sense to me. I don't want an asexual person having more (and kinkier) sex than a non-asexual person just to try to please their partner, or there being no sex but angst and guilt and drama over it. I just want sweet, fluffy fics between two asexual people doing all the same romantic, adorable stuff that's in "normal" fics just without any sex. I've only seen one fic that was like that and it's something I think there should be more of.

It feels like it always has to be 'issue' fic at the moment so instead of just writing asexual characters doing stuff while being asexual it has to be about how asexuals can have sex just like normal people!1!

Me too. I've read great fic in which you can tell one of the characters is asexual from his behavior, but if the word asexual is used? 99% of the time it's shit. It's so bizarre. It's not hard to guess why it would tend to be this way, but I've actually NEVER seen one single good fic AFAIR, which is strange.

That's what I'm afraid of. I want to write fic about asexual characters and I want to make it clear that they're asexual, but I can't imagine having them actually come out and say the word without it sounding ridiculous.

I was thinking of just having them mention how past relationships never worked because the other person wanted sex and they didn't, or explain that the reason they're not in a relationship is because they know other people want sex and they don't, but I'm not sure if those are boring or uncreative ways to say it. IDK.

I don't think that's a boring or uncreative way to say it. I think overly convoluted or formal explanations tend to feel more "off" coming from a character's mouth than straightforward or casual explanations.

Thanks. My initial thought was that that would sound less awkward than a character saying "I'm asexual!" so I'm glad to hear it's not too boring!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's odd at all. That's probably exactly the way to do it, because that sort of thing can totally be slipped into a conversation and sound realistic.

Thanks! Sounding realistic is good!
