well that's an unhelpful rant...
(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 03:43 am (UTC)(link)Seriously, this is why names were invented. Or simply saying "the man" or "the other man." A lot of fanfic writers are either young or amateurs. They do this for fun and don't know a lot about the craft of writing or don't care. Description isn't easy. So, I'd rather have a few "the black man" to remind me that "okay that character is black" as opposed to no description at all, which leaves me with a terrible case of stick figures.
I won't even get into what their considering American Black slang these days. (Feels like a cranky old woman.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 04:43 am (UTC)(link)Except they gave some? They listed counselor, vet, and Falcon. Honestly, though, I'm with the others that overuse of epithets is an issue. Even if they aren't constantly "the black man" or "the darker man".

Except this isn't original fiction. This is fanfic. People reading a Sam/Steve story should be well aware of what Sam looks like without a few "the black man" descriptors tossed in there. And, also, why would you need "the black man" to remind you of what someone looks like to keep you from getting a case of the "stick figures"? Why is skin color the most important descriptive adjective to you? There are so many other descriptive words that could be used if someone chooses to go that route.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 09:15 am (UTC)(link)Agreed so much on that 'description isn't easy' insanity. And I mean, even in original fiction, why do you need that much description? Basic physical traits like hair and skin color should only be given upon the character's introduction, if at all. If later on there is a need to wax poetic about the glimmer of sunlight in someone's red hair or the sexy sheen of sweat on their dark skin... well there are infinitely better ways to do that without reducing the character to "the redhead" or "the black man".
