Re: Local News

I've been half-ass listening to it, but there was a murder in city not that far away from me. Basically a mother and daughter moved to the city years ago, into a habitat for humanity home, telling everyone they were Katrina refugees, I think, and scammed everyone.

The daughter pretended to be physically disabled with a need for a wheelchair and I think she pretended to be mentally disabled as well. Anyway, she and her boyfriend killed her mother and ran off to another state. They've were caught and have been charged. It's just a fucking mess.

This is my local news. I live in Springfield.

Holy shit. I wasn't expecting that. Was that why you made this thread? Because hot damn, this shit is insane.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It was what made me wonder about everyone else's local news. It's pretty much the only thing on ours, and it made me wonder what's happening in other places.

Well that and the rain. Can't wait for a break from that. Anyway, wow, totally wasn't expecting a Springfield anon on FS. I'm still in shock.

Hope that doesn't come across as weird. It's just that I've never really come across people in fannish places from there.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I never come across people near here in fannish places either, so it surprised me too!

Ugh yes. The rain can go away. Or at least all this humidity.

Oh hey... They just talked about a stabbing on Kearney. There's other stuff in the news tonight.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the people I've come across in fannish spaces from Missouri live in the bigger cities like St. Louis, so finding someone anywhere close to my town is kinda weird.

I want it to go away. Both the rain and the humidity. I'd rather have dry heat than what we've got now.

I remember hearing about that on the news last night! Is it just me or is violent crime up there a bit on the rise? There's been quite a few murders this year.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's the same for me. Or I'll come across people who are going to school in Fayetteville or who live in Oklahoma, but never anyone close to me. I have an LJ friend who went to school very near here, but isn't from here and doesn't live here now. It's also this way when it comes to meeting people who are from where I came from (which is California, but a part of California where I just never see fannish people from).

I would so rather have dry heat. I grew up with dry heat and I complained about that way more than I should have given what it's like here now.

It honestly seems like it. It seems like it's every day now too. And some of the cases are truly bizarre.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty much the same. I'll either come across people from other places so far off from me while still being in the state or from a neighboring state where it can't be considered that close. If you don't mind me asking, how long have you lived in Springfield and any particular reason for moving there?

Dry heat is so much better than this, it isn't funny. I welcome it whenever we get it. Muggy heat is the worst.

They really are. Wasn't there like a quadruple homicide or something? I remember that they found like four bodies in a hotel there or something. It really does seem like it's ever day that I'm hearing about a stabbing or domestic assault or murder up there.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I moved here from California in 2008. And I lived in Chicago briefly a few years ago before coming back to Springfield, so I've been here for 6 1/2 years all told. Why I moved is a long story, but basically, I had a whole side of my family that I grew up not knowing. I became close to my half sister through letters and phone calls, and I decided that I wanted to move out here and get to know this family in person. And I think I just needed a change, to be honest. I'd gotten into a rut in California.

There was! I'd forgotten about that. In a hotel on Kearney, I think? Wasn't there also a hotel-related thing in Branson a few months ago too?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for responding! That's certainly a great reason for moving there. I'm glad that you were able to connect with your sister and I hope that everything went well. Have you enjoyed life there?

I'm not sure on what street it was, but it was apparently actually in a motel room. It happened last year, it seems. I just sort of skimmed the article just now tbh. And there was that absolutely tragic standoff where it was revealed afterwards that the man killed his two children. Just damn.

I can't remember the Branson thing! Going to have to google around a bit.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I have, actually! I wasn't sure how much I'd like Springfield based on what I knew about it before I moved here. It's a lot like where I came from, actually. But it's bigger, so there's more to do and more places to eat. Especially if you like Chinese food. I don't regret moving here.

I remember that standoff... That was such terrible news. The thing in Branson - you've probably found it because I Googled and it came up right away but I remembered it being this year and it being a man killing a young child.

And there was that girl who was kidnapped and murdered here in Springfield last year.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm happy to hear it! :) You really lucked out with regards to it being similar to where you came from. I don't visit Springfield often and usually have only gone for appointments, so would you mind giving me some restaurant recs? Especially places to get some good Chinese food.

It was absolutely tragic. I wasn't expecting that to happen when I first heard about the standoff going on. It ended in the worst way imaginable. And now that I've google the murder in Branson, I remember hearing about it. That poor little girl and her family.

Hailey Owens? Yeah, that was really big news last year. It was depressing to hear about. To think that the guy who did it was involved at her school iirc. I just don't know what's going on up there.

SA

Oh man, I hope that I didn't come across as weird when asking for resturant recs. Sorry if I weirded you out by asking, anon! Like I said, most of my trips to the city have been in and out, so I don't really stay long enough to explore what the city has to offer.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no! It didn't at all. I had to go do some things. Give me a bit and I'll come up with some recs. :P

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. So my recs are probably going to be sucky because 1. I don't have a lot of money for eating out, and 2. I always think things I'm suggesting are sucky, tbh. Anyway...

My favorite Chinese place in town is called Happy China. It's on E. Battlefield. They're attached to a gas station, so it looks like it's not going to be the best place to eat, but they have the best crab rangoons in town, and if you like coconut, the coconut chicken or shrimp are AMAZING.

I also really love the Vietnamese and Korean places on Sunshine. They're right next to each other. Golden Korean and... I can't remember the name of the Vietnamese place. There are other Korean and Vietnamese restaurants in town. These are the restaurants that Korean and Vietnamese residents of Springfield eat at.

For Mexican food, Purple Burrito is definitely the best. I may be biased because I'm Californian, and what they do is Californian Mexican food, but my sister's from here and she loves it too. They have a fish burrito that is THE BEST. There are a couple different Purple Burrito locations in town. There are two on S Campbell. I'd recommend the southernmost one on that street. It's got the full menu, whereas the other doesn't.

On Glenstone, London Calling is a must. It's a food truck basically, and easy to spot because it's always in the same parking lot and is accompanied by a double decker bus. They have pasties, which are really delicious. I'd eat there every day if I could.

And if you like coffee and/or donuts, there's Mudhouse on South Avenue in downtown Springfield for the coffee, and Hurts Donut on Park Central W in downtown for the donuts. Both are awesome.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my goodness, I wasn't expecting so many recs! Thank you so much for these, anon! And don't worry, there's bound to be at least a few places on here that I will like. :)

Definitely going to check out Happy China asap. I love crab rangoon and finding a place that serves good ones is a pain. I'm Googling some of these places right now, so I don't have much to say other than thank you!

I'm bookmarking this post on my phone so when I next go to Springfield, I will have a place to eat out.

And I really had a nice time chatting with you! I'm still a bit surprised tbh.

I looked it up, and... wow. There's a picture in the article I found that really seals the bizarre nature of this story. http://www.news-leader.com/story/news/crime/2015/06/16/daughter-boyfriend-charged-murder-dee-dee-blancharde/28803189/

Re: Local News

(Anonymous) 2015-06-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It is the most bizarre story. Truly.

One of the local news stations had done a series of interviews with these people for various reasons - when they got their house, when there was another hurricane in the gulf region. There were showing this footage before they'd found the girl, but after they'd discovered her mother - or maybe they'd found the girl, but they hadn't released yet that she was a suspect? - and I had this passing thought that she was supposed to be a developmentally disabled 9-year-old but looked and sounded more like a teenager. I didn't expect all of this though. I thought I was just being cynical.
