er, Graphic novel is a very good, interchangable term. Graphic novel refers to those thick books that you get of comics, whether it be manga or american comics. Remember, most comics are like, 40 page booklets that come in issue form, and otherise, you get the ones that are montly anthologies.

TL;DR: Graphic novel is a useful term for a comic format.

'graphic novel' just sounds very, very pretentious to me. what's wrong with just calling something a comic?

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
A comic is a form of media.

A graphic novel is a way of collecting a group of single issue comics (or chapters, in manga) into a format that is easier to store and collect.

[identity profile] terrie.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
that's not necessarily true. that is assuming that every comic ever (or 'graphic novel,' if we're using your definition) was originally released in small issue-based formats. a lot of comics authors release their work directly to book format.

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's becoming common these days to do that, but the origin of the gn is as i have said, an easier, more collectable format. People are releasing their work in graphic novel format these days for the same reason. It's simply easier publish, and collect.

[identity profile] terrie.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
well yes, i recognise that 'graphic novel' is the term used for the books. but like, if anyone ever says 'i draw graphic novels' instead of 'i draw comics,' i am immediately wary of that.

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
ugh yeah true, people that act like 'graphic novel' is something like... better than comics are like ...wut. If you don't want to be labelled a nerd why are you even drawing comics XD

[identity profile] terrie.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
yes! that is what i meant. sorry, i'm bad at explaining things. D: also, this might be the most intelligent conversation i've ever had on FS, yay!

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
XD haha wow can you believe it? non drama on FS!

[identity profile] miss-arel.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
My understanding is that graphic novel (at least in relation to Western comics) refers to any length comic story that was never serialized -- i.e., it is like a novel in that it's published only as a whole, not as a collection of segments. trade paperback, I believe is the proper term for the latter. So, "Pride of Baghdad" is a GN; "Watchmen" is a TPB.

Ok, I'll stop being pedantic now. ^^;

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I find trade paperback/graphic novel are interchangable, ie: fruits basket, naruto, bleach, death note, one peice, samurai champloo... all manga that were issue based, at least in shonen jump or some other magazine (which seems to be the case these days), and were later released as graphic novels. Trade paperbacks seem to be referred as ones like watchmen, v, sandman, that were released in a similar format but as a larger format, ie width x height. I can't really just ignore manga in the definition of the format, as it's another pioneering form of comic.

At least thats the difference I've noted XP
