Yeah, I'm with you there. I understand the appeal for younger fans, but when I started to encounter twenty-somethings, thirty-somethings, forty-somethings (wtfh?) who garbled over the show like six-year-olds? That kind of made me want to go back to being as sheltered as I was when I was six, and I only watched educational television and ate granola bars. Seriously. It's a kids show. Either be less creepy, old!Avatar fanbase, or gtfo. Seriously.

(And I don't even watch it. Lulz.)

No offense but do you think like... Naruto fans who are older need to gtfo as well? Because it's a series for children as well, just as much as AtLA is.

I'm sixteen. And Naruto is "Young Adult" literature, sweetums. Check your Japanese listings for details. Unless, of course, you don't know where to find those, sense they don't include your delightful children's cartoon of bright colors and gross older fans. ♥

Naruto is aimed at middle-schoolers. And in the states it's rated for teens. So, generally 13-16 year-olds. Avatar is rated for a similar age group.

You like what you like. Avatar is a well-written show. So what does it matter that people older than than the intended audience enjoy it? Is it bad for me enjoy Disney movies even though I'm about to graduate college?

You'll find creepy fans in just about every fandom. Yeah, they can be creepy and annoying, but it's not right to believe that they are not allowed to enjoy a show.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not "young adult." I am honestly not sure where they stick it at the library over here, but the target audience (in Japan) is children and preteens. Same as Avatar. That doesn't mean that it doesn't have older fans (of course it does), but Shounen Jump= target audience young boys, simply put. An adult should be just as out of place in AtLa as Naruto, which should be- not at all! Because why put an age limit on something that just happens to be well written entertainment?

Naruto is targeted at middle schoolers in Japan, dude. It runs in Jump.

And regardless, who the hell cares what the target audience is, if you like it, you like it.

Yeeeah...I wouldn't worry. I think you're pretty much already there.

But your official distinction between a kids' show and "young adult literature" gave me many lols. Not that I blame you; making that distinction when I was 13 made me feel all grown up, too.

(Then maybe you don't know what you're talking about. LULZ!)

Posting with a Naruto icon! Edgy!

You're getting angry fans all over your ass, so here's me saying I agree. It may just be me being sixteen here, but I expect adults to have more interesting, more productive things to do than slash 12-year-old boys together.

I watched Avatar up until I saw the sometimes clunky dialogue and voice acting and my sisters really getting into it and I realized that maybe I was outgrowing it. :O

Re: 26

Wow, just because a person is a fan of something that is outside their demographic does not mean they aren't being productive. Fandom is a hobby, it is something people do for fun, and despite popular belief, adults still want to have fun. And for some people watching and liking Avatar is fun. It does not mean they are sick freaks.

In fact most of the older Avatar fan watches the show with their kids, and they enjoy it. There is no law that says that young adult literature and media can't be enjoyed by more than just a specific demographic.

Heh. Ain't it cute when teens try to act "older"? Like when 14-year-olds curse constantly and think it makes them sound mature or something.

Word to what you said. Honestly, I didn't want to touch Avatar until a college buddy handed me the first season. It's been amazing ever since. No more clunky dialogue than I'd expect from any other show, geared at any other audience. And, c'mon, in "Day of Black Sun" they basically recreated Normandy!

Maybe it's that these young whippersnappers who didn't grow up on Animaniacs and Batman:TAS don't realize that just because something is child-appropriate doesn't make it childish. Good, not-forced-down-to-"kiddie-level" writing will win out every time.

I expect adults to have more interesting, more productive things to do than slash 12-year-old boys together.

A) I think most of the crazy shippers tend to be teens.
B) Sorry, no. Hate to bust your bubble, but we really don't.

Word.

Honestly Batman:TAS and Animaniacs were two of the most intelligent tv shows on during that time, despite being aired during a kid friendly time slot.

My 40-something BOSS watches Avatar with his kids and gets a kick out of it. I had some doodles of it in my sketchbook during my job interview and he immediately recognized it. The best part was when I heard him gasp when he saw it and a look of "Dude! Avatar! That's so awesome."

I like that you're saying that with a Naruto icon.

All right if you're sixteen (a bit above the target age range for both series), don't you have something more productive to do? Like your homework or something?

Re: 26

[identity profile] mikkeneko.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortunately, now that I'm an adult, I don't have to give a shit about what people think of me for liking quality entertainment, regardless of what demographic it's being marketed for.

I'm sure when you get there, you'll enjoy it too.

Re: 26

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of those forty-somethings watch the show with their kids, and there is nothing wrong with them enjoying it and wanting to discuss it with others who are into the same thing.

Why don't you include the Harry Potter fandom because it is so much bigger, and the adult fanbase for those books is huge, probably much bigger than what Avatar can hope to achieve.

Re: 26

[identity profile] militarypenguin.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe try watching the show yourself before making such radical assumptions?

Really, a show's recommended age group seldom reflects the maturity of the show itself. Batman: the Animated Series might be aimed at the 7 and up crowd, but that doesn't automatically prevent it from presenting its mature themes in a more serious manner than a majority of the shows on Adult Swim could.
