Alan Rickman for Snape. He's a great actor, and movie!Snape is an interesting character, but he's almost nothing like book!Snape.

I agree completely - and I'm feeling vindicated right now, because I used to run in internet circle that absolutely WORSHIPPED his Snape.

who could you see in that part, then?

(Movie Snape always seemed okay to me, but I'm curious to hear a different perspective)

I don't know. Maybe Rickman could have done it if he played it differently. He was too nice, though. And too attractive (though that was a common problem). But really, he just played the character too sympathetically. Snape, in the book, is horrible, and up until book 7 we don't really see a good side to him at all. But movie!Snape was so toned down that he was completely unrecognizable.

Huh... okay. I didn't find him particularly nice OR attractive, but I suppose I mmight have been projecting waht I knew of book!Snape onto the charactyerization.

(I do admit that right up until the end I thought that Snape was secretly working for Dumbledore or the Greater Good or something: I can't recall how/where I got that impression.)

If I remember correctly (too lazy to Google), Tim Roth was originally considered for the role of Snape, and he would have been scary-good at it. Just watch Rob Roy sometime. My only real objection to Alan Rickman being cast is that he was 20+ years too old for the part (all of the Marauders were). Snape should have been in his early 30s when Harry started school, not in his mid-50s.

This is how I feel about Gary Oldman. Great actor, but I feel he was completely wrong for the part of Sirius.

I feel like he got half of the part right. He got the parental figure for Harry right and the kind of creepy guy who was in prison for 12 years and then turns out to be innocent part right. He just didn't get the prankster and humor parts.

+1
Reading the books I imagined Sirius differently.

I disagree, largely because I don't think that book!Snape would have made the transition to screen very well. Actually seeing some of the shit he pulled that was cut or altered for the films on-screen would have made him a much more hateful character, and would have made the end reveal that he genuinely was working on the side of light the entire time (albeit for entirely selfish reasons) seem more like an asspull than something that makes sense when you look back on his actions.
